guy stormed the mat...was warned. After his kid got pinned, daddy stormed again. At which point he was tossed. As he was being escorted to the door, he turn into Mr Wellert and attempted to come at him. At which point said headlock was administered. lol Ask me about it, i'll give details when i see ya.

Whoa, that's just sad. I don't like to see my kid get beat either, especially in a poorly called match. (Not that I'm saying it poorly called, I wasn't even there.) But my kid would never speak to me again if I did something like that. It's harder on the kids when parents act inappropriately. Why would ya do that to them?

I was told that not only the father was going nuts but a Smithville assist. coach told the fan to kiss his a--. I feel bad both of the kids, the son and the boy who won. Smithville this is JH tourn. not the Super Bowl!

I'm sure it was the hip toss coach. The two assistants get CRAZY at times.

lol..it jsut made us Bear Fans smile. The 'SEA OF GOLD' is loud and proud....and large, but even us lowly Golden Bears fans dont live up the the Green Wave fans...lol. The 'coach' was verbal, but it was actually a parent, not a coach that got tossed. Rick handled it well.

Set the scene: Smithie wrestlers and fans flocked matside for EVERY match. They claimed there was nowhere to sit. During this match, the Smithville kid had an apparent pin in the 1st period. The refs were a lil 'green'..(no pun intended). The kid was decked. No call, Dad storms the mat, Mom, sitting matside on he knees acting like a raging chimpanzee. Warning...continue wrestling. Gts to the 3rd period...smithvile kid winning 6-1? gets rolled and buried!!! Ref sticks a fork in him...Dad AGAIN storm the mat....Rick sprinted across the mat...lol, i thought he was gonna tackle the guy...but it all ended good. The young man whos father embarassed him got 4th and nobody got hurt. Beast didnt have to hiptoss anyone.

Boy Oh Boy! I wonder when Mr. Wellert is going to get out of this coaching business. Last year was the first time I've ever witnessed him "lose his cool" at the Jr. High WCAL. Now he's headlocking and hip tossing parents from the opposing team.... HMMM!!! What could happen next year? Mr. Wellert in gold???

he didnt lose his cool at all, he merely contained the situation. He was walking the guy to the door when the parent turned into him..,,he had to take action to protect himself. Lucky it wasnt me..lol

I feel bad for the Smithies. They were having such a good season and now all the talk is going to be about the crazed fan storming the mat. A little preventative officiating would have went a long way to stop this. Keep the fans in the stands. Its not an open and I highly doubt that the bleachers had reached capacity. Leaving enraged fans close to action asks for trouble.

Very embarassing. What weight class was the wrestler from?

There is no way for the officials to control those actions. That comes down to the people running the tournament. You can ask and ask and ask people to get off the mats or away from the mats but it then comes down to those running the tournament. From the sounds of it Mr. Wellert and the Nwestern bunch did their best.

The teams/wrestlers/parents on/next to the mats is something that is common place now. As an official I don't have a problem with it usually because my mind is on the match. If it does become problem I let them know and usually that's that. If it isn't resolved then it's up to those running the tournament.

I can honestly say though after seeing Smithville's group a handful of times this year that I could see something like this happening. O well. What are you going to do?!?!

By losing his cool I meant saying more than 6 words and raising his voice above a whisper.

Player: I disagree. As an official I first warn the fans/wrestlers, second warn the coach (kinda man to man), third speak with the tourney director, and last but not least if they won't clear away I simply won't continue reffing until the mat area is clear. Its simply a safety issue. Trust me if it comes to that your mat will stay clear. Don't forget if wrestlers are matside take a team point. I agree about staying focused on the match, but you can't help notice between matches & get it handled.

I think it's one of those pick your battles situations. I've never gone past step two. They clear for a bit... then next round they come back or sooner. Especially at the Jr. High level. So as long as they are off the mat I usually just let it go at that. Especially when it's just wrestlers.

rope the mat area to keep em out or make a rule, 1 warning, 2nd time they are out of there. I get plenty of good photos and films with my zoom from the stands. No reason for fans to be matside, or team mates either. Too volatile.
