Gallipolis Gallia Academy High School captured five 10-minute quarter wins, lost one and tied one during a two hour and 30 minute pre-season scrimmage in the new GAHS gymnasium at Centenary Saturday morning.

Coach Jim Osborne played 13 of 14 varsity prospects during the seven sessions. Junior Austin Wilson did not dress for the practice tilts because of a football injury.

Initial starters were Cory Eberhard, Jordan Cornwell, Ethan Moore, John Troester and Chuck Calvert. Second round starters were Bryce Amos, Nate Allison, Nick Mitchell, Jared Golden and Moore.

Observe used several combinations from the above list during the five remaining quarters, including Tyler Eastman, Ben Robinson, Joe Jenkins, and Cody Billings.

In the first outing, GAHS edged Fairland, 13-12. The Blue Devils downed Alexander 5-4 in their second matchup. Gallia Academy tripped Fairland 11-2 in the third outing, then outlasted Alexander 11-10 in the fourth contest.

In the fifth battle, Gallipolis and Fairland fought to an 8-8 tie. In the sixth tilt, GAHS downed Alexander, 12-7 and in the final outing, Fairland edged GAHS, 10-9.

Tom Moore’s GAHS reserves battled Fairland and Alexander’s reserves and the Blue Imps looked impressive during the two and one-half hour practice tilts.

The GAHS frosh did not have a scrimmage, but four or five Gallipolis yearlings took part in the reserve scrimmage.

The second practice tilt is Saturday, Nov. 21, against Eastern of Meigs County, beginning at 9 a.m.

The third contest is Tuesday, Nov. 24, against defending state champion Oak Hill. It’s the second annual Foundation contest. The girls’ game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ game. Proceeds from these contests will go towards Holzer Center’s “Fight Against Cancer” and Jane Hatfield for “Athletes in Action.”

The final pre-season battle will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, against Washington CH and Waverly, starting at 9 a.m.

GAHS will open its 2009-10 campaign on Saturday, Dec. 5, at home against non-league Rock Hill, followed by a home game against non-league River Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 8. First away game is Saturday, Dec. 12, at Athens.

Most of the GAHS games will be triple-headers this year with the freshmen playing first at 5:30 p.m.

New reserve seat sales will be announced later by GAHS Athletic Director Bill Wamsley.

The new Blue Devil gym will seat 1,800 fans, and if necessary, will hold around 2,000 if the indoor track is needed for a standing room only crowd.
