Just got back from the registrar's office and a guy in front of me was charged 40 dollars as a late fee for two registrations. This guy was pissed. He was yelling at the lady behind the counter at the top of his lungs saying that he renewed his tags on his birthday for the last 40 years. He was yelling so loud that 3 people called 911. The police came and cuffed the guy. Apparently the law changed Jan 1st. to make it so your tags expire at midnight the morning of your birthday.
I have not heard or read of this before today. I do not know if it applies to your drivers license or not, but it seems as though the state is trying to raise revenues in a HORRIBLE way.
So here's to you Mr. BMV mad guy at the BMV. Happy Fucking Birthday!

As far as renewing your license goes...i don't think they fine you $20 for 7 days after your license expires.

Wow, I hope he sues the shit out of them. That isn't the new law. The new law is you have 7 days to renew after the expiration before you are fined $20.
https://www.oplates.com/Renewal_begin.aspIf you are renewing more than 7 calendar days past your expiration date, you will be charged a $20.00 Late Fee.

I don't think a get a ton in a lawsuit, regardless of whether he was right or not, he actions were ludicrous and completely out of line. He could have just refused to renew, check the law himself, and then bring it to their attention the next day.
But yea, you're right, my birthday was the 10th, renewed on that same day, as well as got a new license, no fee, and i heard the employee tell another person the exact same thing you posted, LJ.

To lower your cost should you be late, inform them that the vehicle in question is not in use, they will pro-rate usage and charge you less.

No they weren't. They were trying to make up their own law. Hell, they could have even been trying to pocket the money.cbus4life wrote: I don't think a get a ton in a lawsuit, regardless of whether he was right or not, he actions were ludicrous and completely out of line.
True, but I don't think very much is an overreaction to fraud. He could have just refused to renew, check the law himself, and then bring it to their attention the next day.

I'm not so sure about that. The people getting screwed the most are the one's with seasonal trailers and such. This is to cut down on the pro-rating and to get even more money.ytownfootball wrote: To lower your cost should you be late, inform them that the vehicle in question is not in use, they will pro-rate usage and charge you less.

Ok, well, I will tell the 7 or so guys on Columbus Racing that they could have got pro-rating for their summer trailers if they renewed now and just told the BMV that they didn't use it until summer. Or the 15 or so guys with their summer cars in storage.ytownfootball wrote: I'm positive of it.
Oh wait, they tried it and it doesn't work.

I renewed two late reg. yesterday, they won't pro-rate the late fee but she did pro-rate the normal registration. Trust me, I did it less than 24 hours ago.
Trailers I doubt would apply.

I've never seen a prorate on a tag that comes out to anywhere near ~$20 with all the fees and such. In other words, you still ended up paying more didn't you?ytownfootball wrote: I renewed two late reg. yesterday, they won't pro-rate the late fee but she did pro-rate the normal registration. Oh absolutely, but she did knock off a few bucks as though the car/truck weren't in use for the time past the reg. renewal date. I think she wanted a date, all full of "honies and sweetheart" shit.

Well, i think it is safe to say it was an "overreaction" when three other folks thought he acting so bad that they called 911.
Yes, he was in the right to be upset, but what good does flying off the handle do? None.

I've had 3 people call 911 on me when I bent over to pick up something in the store and my gun printed. Does that mean I did something wrong?cbus4life wrote: Well, i think it is safe to say it was an "overreaction" when three other folks thought he acting so bad that they called 911.

We live in a panic driven society, just because 3 other people called 911 does not mean he was wrong or even acting all that bad.

Well I just had to pay $65 for new plates last week...I wasn't late and didn't have any extra fees. I just want to complain because I feel like it. I also have to go get a new license sometime next week...boo.

Correction, the law took effect in Oct 2009.
I was slammed with the $20 fee in December as my birthday is in late Nov. I was 15 days late.
The girl at the counter says...."Oh, by the way, there is a new late fee you have to pay as well."
I said, "Oh? Okay, what is it.. a few bucks?"
Her: " No, it's 20."
Me: "Are you kidding me? Wow... late is late I guess."
Her: "Yep, we've had a few people get really upset and had to call the police."
Me: "You figure they would've sent a notice to everyone advising them of this. But no, Ohio has to find a way to screw it's people out of money somehow."
Her: "I totally agree, and I even work here."

they could buy tv air time and put commercials on 24 hours a day, people would still bitch and complain the same.Go_Fast_Sports wrote: Correction, the law took effect in Oct 2009.

1) Why would anyone want to go to the BMV ON their birthday?
2) You can mail in your renewal like 6 weeks before its due and they send it to your house.
3) this thread got me thinking... Did I ever put my 09 tag on my truck? Nope!
Was still above my sun viser, fresh out of the mail box. Just a tad late, bday is in March. So much for the sticker police!
