I want to know what the pollsters in DIV are smoking??? There is no way, and I mean no way, six teams are better than Hiland. I know polls mean nothing come tournament time, but come on people.

yeah, I saw that too 300. after the boys poll it was apparent that these are inherently quite inaccurate , but are the people who vote on this paying any attention at all to what's going on?

I know that this team lost a lot from last year, and the meltdown in the finals against Africentric may still linger in some minds, but pardon the phrase....WTF??

Oh well, come March, we'll see who's standing in the end.

Rankings don't score any points on the floor, but I had exactly the same reaction, I was astonished that Lutheran East and Hiland were not ranked higher. I'm a Hiland fan and undoubtedly biased, but the statistician in me was boggled.

Hiland has finished the regular season in the top five the last seven years in a row. They've made the final four five out of the last six years. Their tournament record the last six years is 34-3, with all three losses coming against the eventual state champion team. They graduated one player from last year's state runner-up team. They lost another player to injury, but this is still an experienced team.

Both Massey and Maxpreps have Lutheran East and Hiland ranked #1 and #2 in Division IV. See
http://www.highschoolsports.net/defaultcal300x250.cfm?ct=stateratings&conftodisp=Ohio&year=2010&conf_id1=CFB76415&spt=2&division=2
and
http://www.maxpreps.com/rankings/girls-basketball/1/division/oh/p_B_Lb2lZEGuel069ti28A/division-iv.htm

In recent years I've found these ranking systems to be very good, although predictions for any individual game are of course far from guaranteed.

Bucyrus Wynford doesn't make the top ten of either Massey nor MaxPreps, and Kirtland doesn't make the top twenty-five. In the case of Kirtland, this might be partly because only four game results have been entered in MaxPreps. But still, it seems rather strange.

I'm curious what the reasoning of the voters is.

Other points of interest are
--Minster doesn't make the list of 18 ranked Div. IV teams, but they make the top 15 of both Massey and MaxPreps in spite of Minster's 4-4 record. These rating services pay attention to strength of schedule, and Minster plays in a very strong league.
--Massey has both Ft. Recovery & Africentric listed in Div. IV, but they are Div. III teams this year.
--Ottoville, Kalida, and Delphos St. John's are top five teams in all 3 rating systems.

=================================
DIVISION IV
1. Delphos St. John’s (7), 9-0, 171
2. Bucyrus Wynford (4), 11-0, 158
3. Ottoville (3), 11-0, 154
4. Kalida (1), 10-0, 129
5. Kirtland (2), 9-0, 97
6. Cleveland Hts. Lutheran East (2),11-3, 94
7. Berlin Hiland (4), 9-0, 90
8. Holgate, 10-1, 86,
T9. New Riegel, 8-1, 63
T9. Canal Winchester Harvest Prep (1), 10-1, 63

I laughed so hard when I saw that poll. It just shows what some of us has known for a long time - there are some complete idiots in the Associated Press and, apparently, a NW Ohio bias.

But, it doesn't matter. This isn't the BCS!

That's funny, I didn't notice that. Four out of the top five Div IV teams are in NW OHIO, and seven of the top eleven (Delphos SJ, Bucyrus W., Ottoville, Kalida, Holgate, New Riegel, and Pandora-Gilboa). It does sound like a nefarious plot, and it all seems to be centered around Pandora-Gilboa -:). Pandora is 60 miles from Bucyrus, and is within 35 miles or less of all of the rest.

Isn't there some fable about Pandora's box? Must have something to do with this poll.

There are a lot of Div. IV teams in NW Ohio, and often a lot of good ones. I wonder how unusual this over-representation is.

League strength might have something to do with Hiland's spot in the poll. Other than West Holmes, Hiland has played games against much inferior opponents in the weak IVC. And I mean no disrespect to the other IVC schools, teams, and players, that is just the facts.

After this weekend the pollsters should have a better idea where Hiland should be in Div. IV

And I would argue that this weekend has nothing to do with where Hiland is ranked IF they lose, especially to Potter's House. Now if they win 2 games, which I consider unlikely, there is no other D4 team in the state that could beat Potter's House and Mason. But Africentric got beat by Regina by 50 points at the Classic last year, but went on to win the D4 championship. Obviously, when a small school gets their brains beat out by a big school or a state/national power, it would appear to have little relevance to how that school should be related to other D4 schools.

I am guessing that Potters House is D1 in Florida?

I didn't get a chance to read anything on them, but are they a Florida powerhouse?

forget Florida... top 25 team nationally in most polls... "someone who knows what they're talking about" has said that they're the best girls team he's ever seen, period.

Potter's House doesn't compete under the Florida high school athletic assn. They play a 40 game national schedule. They travel all across the country for games, and my understanding is that they play for a national title among similar schools in a tournament sponsored by Nike. I don't think they are a big school, but rather a fairly good size for a private Christian school. They are from, I think, Tallahassee, but I could be wrong about that. Their Coach is Tony Bannister whose daughter Antoinette is rated as a top 10 soph in the country. His son played at Virginia and is playing pro ball in Europe. 4 of his players were Nike all-americans last year. They are not that tall but very fast. Pressing and running is their game.

From what I remember, they returned all but 1 player from the team that lost to Africentric before losing one to injury.

The voters I know said Hiland wasn't listed on the sheet of reccomendations member papers compile and the AP sends out.

There aren't six teams in D4 better than Hiland.

yeah im gonna have to agree on how unimportant this poll is... the strength of the IVC never has and never will effect them from getting to the state title and most of the time winning it...

Hiland tied for the 2nd most 1st place votes with 4, so for them to end up 7th, there had to be quite a few ballots where they were completely left off... which is a head-scratcher.

Talked to Potter's House's head coaches wife last night. They are from Jacksonville. Watched them practice. They do have some height - 3 girls 6' or so. I think only one of them is a major contributor.

Watched Lakota West practice too. Man, they went hard considering it was the evening before a big game. The asst., Amber Gray's dad, did most of the vocal coaching while head coach sat mostly quiet. Unusual approach.

Update on Amber Gray: Spoke with her dad. She went in for shoulder surgery at UT and began to have complications including partial paralysis of her leg. Family had her transferred to a Cincy hospitial where they discovered she had a brain bleed during or right after surgery. She is in rehab and progressing well. She is expected to play at Tennessee next season.

pretty amazing that a high school team has a national schedule! travel alone would cost thousands per year.

Loudonville should be in the Top 5 of D.III period. They have a very deep, talented team who has several great wins already. No way they should not even be ranked right now.
