The idea is to legalize it and tax it. I personally think it's an idea worth exploring.

I'm indifferent. I wouldn't smoke it if it was legal, but I know plenty of people who's only crime is they like to smoke a little pot. I don't really think it's that big of a deal.

Let me see if I understand this, "The law would also call for a fee of $50 per ounce sold and ..." does that mean if I buy an ounce for $50, that an additional fee of $50 would be added, making my total purchase price for an ounce $100?

My next question would be, how does that price compare to what you would pay on the street for an ounce? Actually I think I know someone that might know...

I am not against it personally. I think the cost of enforcement far out weighs the perceived social/physical ills reguarding the legal use of marijuana. I just hope the federal government stays out of this.

Let the states decide how they want to handle it.

When pot is outlawed, only outlaws will have pot.

Criminalizing possession of weed is just an offshoot regarding the lunacy of prohibition....only worse.

So, will they have to make exceptions to the anti-smoking laws to allow pot bars?

I know what people are going to say regarding the science, I'm just absolutely shocked that we would decriminalize marijuana while so obviously trying to make cigarettes illegal via the backdoor (of which CA is the leading proponent).

Just saying if tax revenues are the primary driver, one wonders how much tax revenues they've lost on cigarette sales.

Speaking of bargains, if this is going to happen maybe it's time to buy Philip-Morris stock as I'm pretty certain they would be fully prepared to jump all over this.[/quote]

This is a HUGE step towards the ending of marijuana prohibition in the United States. If this passes and other states see the profit gain, they will surely be on board. This is a good time to push this as well since pharmaceutical companies are more concerned with the health care situation right now and won't be able to put as much resources towards prohibition propaganda.

for standard herbage, anywhere from 100-120 for an O.
for higher end shit, anywhere from 325-400 for an O

Add 50 to those for the tax, although I am sure they would lower the price with that big of a tax.

As for this, packing my bags the day they legalize it!

Well, depends on how much more it would cost to produce then cigarettes. I think not much. A pack of cigarettes is 0.12 ounces, so we are talking 8X that volume.

I don't know, what is a pack of cigarettes, like $6-$7? But probably at least half of that is tax.

So I'd say a pack of Marlboro Greens would set you back $7, plus another $7 in tax....times 8 would be $112 an ounce. Assuming it's no more costly to produce, you could be talking a price as low as $70 an ounce. My guess given demand and that people would be less likely to go to an illegal dealer, it goes for much more than that. If you think the alternative is a 12 pack vs., I have no idea, 1 gram...then 1 gram should be worth about $10...that means a pack goes for about $40...making an ounce worth $320 (tax included).

What would be interesting is how competition with illegal dealers works. Easier, cleaner and safer to get is a pretty big disadvantage, but I should think their margin is quite large. The whole issue is like an economist's wet dream.

The problem is, would the black market stuff still be cheaper? I think the black market pot will still be as big of a headache if not more than it is now. The state will make some money but at what cost? Until you have some real buisnesses doing the growing and manufacturing I don't think the legal stuff will be cheaper than the black market stuff.

I wonder if it would be straight weed, or would they add a bunch of chemicals like they do to cigarettes.

A lot of people believe Philip Morris is geared up and ready to go the day it becomes legal. They supposedly own the trademarks on a bunch of potential names like Marlboro Greens.

i think that if it was regulated and grown legally by the gov't the price would drop dramatically....i think the prices are higher because it is illegal contraband. I also the the potency would probably be alot lower.

as far as how you could get it, i have friends in cali that get it a ton of ways, like oil, pill, spray....all for medicinal use of course, they even had vending machines for a while as well as many different strains of plant for different types of uses....

I would certainly hope not, that would be destroying a perfectly natural herb and the whole reason behind the legalization of weed. That it isn't addictive, that it has medicinal purposes, and it is perfectly al' natural.
