Loooking at d3 , seems like triway way to high at 5th and Hiland at 14th under appreciated in d4.

Weird that Hiland(D4) beat Triway(D3) yet Triway is rated 5th.

I doubt that "The Budget" gets any votes in the AP poll.wes_mantooth wrote: Weird that Hiland(D4) beat Triway(D3) yet Triway is rated 5th.

I noticed that as well. Don't have a problem with Hiland's ranking; we haven't played like a top ten team. Hopefully we can get there by the end of the year when it matters.wes_mantooth wrote: Weird that Hiland(D4) beat Triway(D3) yet Triway is rated 5th.
But if Triway is rated 5 in D3, and Hiland beat them by 19 in the Pit, kinda tells you there's a litle problem with the validity of the rankings. Which for the most part is common knowledge and not all that surprising I guess. (It does make one wonder why some schools have large banners up celebrating their #1 poll ranking tho...)

Rankings this early in the season are a result of who does the best work of public relations. Those of the news media who have a vote, PR the better teams in their area to the other media voters. I was once one of those voters.
From the look of the first vote, a lot of "Name" schools are in the mix. There will be substantial changes in the next three to four weeks.
As the season continues to flow, media members will look at scores throughout the state on a more consistent basis to help with their selections.
PR work creates more interest. Either you agree or disgree. But in the end, the tournament will eventually decide who is No. 1.

This Northland team has been the "talk of the state" since the end of last year, and the "talk of the country" since they beat the top-ranked team in the nation on TV about one month ago.

Toledo Central Catholic has a really nice team concept. They can play the game the right way. I have the utmost respect for their coach.

I'm more wondering why they don't have every first place vote. They've already proven on a national level that they are one of the best in the nation. In fact Northland is the #1 team in the nation right now.thechosenone wrote: How does Northland have that many points that fast?

waht would you expect from people who vote that can't get out to see the team live. They can only go on reputation. Polls sell papers but the tourney is where you want to be! hey baby it all happens at tourney time. Best time of the year.

Dover didn't get any love in DII either. Hiland should be a top 5 team in DIV. Both are unbeaten and both have a state-wide reputation.

How is Toledo St. John's ranked behind St. Ed's, when SJJ has already beat them this year.

In DIV, #14 Hiland (1 vote for #1) will finish in the top 10, guaranteed! Probably top 5. They are a very, very good team with very good talent and a great coach. Look out for the Hawks from Berlin!
I am a die-hard Triway fan but agree that we are not DIII #5 material. We have some good talent and a great coach and tradition, and we normally are playing our best ball when the tournament comes around. But the way we played our first 10 games, we were not deserving of a top 10 rating. That could change, though, depending on how we finish up the season.

I have a question for Wooster area huddlers. I though Smithville had almost everyone back from an undefeated(regular season) team? If so, I am kind of surprised they are not in the top 10.

No, they did not have everyone back. They lost DIII POY Kenny Kornowski, All-Ohio Tyler Bates, and athletic Beau Carpenter. All Smithville has this year are Derek Orr and Corey Caldwell, with little Bates running the show at the point. When Frizell gets back from his injury, it will open things up a little more... but they're not close to the team they were last year, IMO.wes_mantooth wrote: I have a question for Wooster area huddlers. Their ranking varies in the many different polls across the country. I was going off the national poll printed by the Columbus Dispatch (PrepNation) which has had them at #1 since they beat Findlay.vball10set wrote: actually, they're #2...

I see Newark Catholic is No.1 in DIV. I know they have tradition in football and baseball.
So, what do they have on the hardwood? Do they have any big games coming up on their schedule? Somebody said they almost made the state tournament a year ago.

Sparky NC lost to the state champions in a very close game last year in the regional finals. They have 6 seniors, 4 of them have been playing varsity since they were freshmen.
Here's a link for their schedule. http://www.newarkcatholic.org/Athletics/viewSchedule.asp?SpID=6
