I was reading an article on my phone from yahoo sports and it was asking if the Rooney rule was being followed by Seattle and Washington. I don't know much bout the rule but it says a minority must be interviewed?

That's retarded. Shanahan and Carroll are top coaches that can be immediate hires. Why does a team have to waste its time?

Yeah, it is garbage. I mean, the black dude that was interviewed knew he was only getting interviewed to clear the way for Pete Carroll to be hired. It is a stupid rule and I know this is naive, but you should be able to interview who is best qualified for the job, reguardless of race.

I guess this statement is pushing "politics" forum material, but minorities always want to be equal but then they push for this shit.

I don't mind having measures in place where there actually are race issues, but in terms of hiring coaches it seems to be fixing something that wasn't broken. The best candidate is going to get hired in this day and age in the NFL, regardless of who it is.

NFL franchises are about color -- but it's ONE color and it's GREEN.

They are not going to bypass a qualified candidate who happens to be a minority. They are going to find the best person for the job.

Black people are just too sensitive, always thinking race is in the equation.

They don't just bring in some African-American guy in to waste their time and be done with it. They interview the AA candidate and them refer them to other franchises. Its a way to get AA candidates consideration for higher positions throughout the league....not just the team that interviewed them. If the team likes what they see they refer them to others.

If the coach is good enough, they will be found out. There is not need for an organization to HAVE to interview a minority before hiring the coach they want if they have already decided prior to the minorities rule.

The Rooney rule was put into place to give minorities an opportunity to get higher positions in the NFL. Its not rocket science. The best candidates will get hired, regardless of race, and just because a majority of coaches are white, does not mean that they have those positions because of their race. The Rooney rule is racism, plain and simple, and its even more "laughable" that you are trying to portray it as something else.

No one is questioning whether the best candidate will be hired; this is about providing a basic opportunity for someone who otherwise wouldn't get it.

The racial makeup of the NFL is overwhelmingly black. The league isn't stupid enough to act like getting Norv Turner recycled through every vacancy ad nauseum isn't going to raise eyebrows.

I’m all for the best qualified coach getting the job too. But that was the problem……a lot of times the best coaches weren’t getting the job (African Americans). This is why the Rooney came into effect. The NFL has done much better with the number of African Americans coaches in the league, but college football is a joke. Over 100 schools in division I-A, with only 6 I think are black head coaches? Why is that?

Technically, the Rooney Rule in and of itself is not racist. However, when you consider the actual push behind the rule, Johnnie Cochran and Cyrus Mehri and the threats made to the NFL in a prepared document made by the two entitled "Black Coaches in the National Football League: Superior Performance, Inferior Opportunities" it's pretty clear that the message was "hire more black coaches or face huge litigation".

Following the circulation of this document, the NFL put together a commitee on work place diversity headed by Rooney, to more or less stave off what they felt was impending litigation. This is where the Rooney Rule came from.

In June of this year the Rooney rule was extnded to include general managers and similar front office position under the rule, thereby forcing more candidates to be interviewed.

Don't forget that when the Lions hired Marriucci in '03 they were fined 200K for not interviewing a minority, despite the fact that when all being interviewed by the club caught wind of Mariucci being the man they cancelled their interview. What about Pete and the Seahawks? What if everyone said "Frig it...they got their boy" is that not following the Rooney Rule?

So yeah, technically it's not racist, but it sure as hell looks like it to me.

The Rooney rule is pointless and I agree with many above. Here is something, MAYBE former black players don't make good coaches? Or maybe teams should have to try out a white CB before they sign a black one. Maybe they like them and can tell other team there is a whitey who can play CB and they should let them try out? The Rooney Rule is no longer necessary IMO. We have more black coaches in the NFL and NCAA then ever before. Personally I'd be upset if I were the "token black guy" interviewed to clear the way for another candidate. It is pointless to interview someone that has no chance at the job.

I mean it's 2010. Affirmative Action had a nice run but it's time to truly give everyone equal opportunity.

I'll say the truth. Just as white people don't make good basketball players, for the most part, black people do not make great head coaches. Sorry, but that's just the truth.

There may be more black coaches in the NCAA than ever before but take a look at major college football. You can count how many black head coaches there are on one hand. That's ridiculous. 119 teams and only a few black head coaches???? Come on, man. Something isn't right. Would Turner Gill have a high profile college head coaching job if he was white? I think so.

African Americans typically don't make good head coaches???? Maybe more of them should get an opportunity first before we come to that conclusion. Tony Dungy and Mike Tomlin did okay. Lovie Smith wasn't awful. Mike Singletary seems to be turning things around in San Fran. The NFL seems to be over their issues for the most part but the NCAA (football) really needs to take a hard look at things.
