I haven't been following this "scandal" surrounding Carrol and violations being reported at USC...
Can someone fill me in please?
Thanks

I don't really know alot of the specifics. Unfortunately, there for a long time ESPN refused to acknowledge USC was in real trouble because they didn't break the story (Yahoo sports did).
But essentially, Reggie Bush allegedly received a bunch of gifts and was living in a swanky apartment. Something else happened where he got sued by somebody and he wanted to keep his USC matters private and tried to ask the judge to keep it private. The judge said no, and now everybody thinks the crap is going to hit the fan. On top of that you have the Joe McKnight Land Rover story where somebody gave him/his girlfriend a Land Rover to drive around in.
I just read that NCAA is combining the OJ Mayo business with the Reggie Bush stuff and turning it into one probe. Which explains why USC dumped on its basketball program and threw them under the bus (no post season, and some other stuff)

U$C is going down. Carroll knows this and hence why he is leaving town. This should have happened way earlier, but better late than never .

I'm assuming the delay has to do with Reggie's request to keep his USC shit private? Thus buying more time.

Both programs are being investigated into one group.
I wouldn't be surprised to have a deal done under the table to save face. Have the basketball program take a huge hit and then force Carroll to leave USC for the NFL. Under the agreement he wouldn't be allowed to coach in the NCAA for so many odd years.
But that is a just a weird guess I thought of last night when talking with my father about it.

By combining the two incidents this keeps the NCAA from having to admit there is a culture of misconduct at USC thus eliminating the death penalty. However I think good old Petey knows there are many more problems under the surface. This will get very ugly before it is over. Cars, apartments, and money will essentially take down this program.

As noted above, Bush is being sued by an agent(?) who claims to have had an agreement with him that Bush broke. Bush & his camp wanted a private arbitration with no public information being released; the judge said no.
It's now going to court, which means subpoenas can be issued and statements taken, something the NCAA does not have the power to do. Once that information is taken, under oath, it can be used by the NCAA in its probe.
This is very bad news for the USC program, which has been stonewalling any investigation for a long time now. It's very similar to the whole Ed Martin thing at Michigan years ago in that it wasn't until the feds got involved and were able to get information, the investigation was able to move forward.
Up to that point, Michigan had stonewalled the NCAA and was uncooperative. Since the NCAA has no power to force people to give statements, if folks don't cooperate, they are pretty much at a standstill.

Preacher,
that 'culture of misconduct' has been prevalent for years.
After what happened to SMU, they'll never institute the death penalty again no matter how much it may be warranted

P.S.
Anyone read Bill Plaschkes article today in the LA Times....?
Coming from a guy who is good friends with Pete Carroll, he sure tries to stay away from these allegations.

Pete himself is not being targeted. It's the Athletic Dept. as a whole, but obviously "lack of institutional control" as a result of the action of some football players who were on his team makes him look bad.
Carroll probably had little to nothing to do with it directly, but it happened on his watch and there's no telling how much of it he knew about as it was happening. Any penalties regarding scholarships, victories, postseason play, etc. will affect him directly though.

Yeah Plascke was sucking on Carroll pretty hard in that article. Sure Carroll probably isn't totally to blame with what happened with Bush and McKnight but he was still the captain of the ship and therefore the blame gets placed at his feet. If Carroll takes this job, there is no question that he is running from sanctions. I don't care what Plaschke says.

And I know that Carrol might be leaving in part to the NCAA investigation, but $7 million per year also doesn't hurt.

Pete is bolting as the water is beginning to boil around him. McKnight crap is still going on, and he knows he could be called into court about Bush as well. He is feeling the heat...and RUNNING for the Hills. Money is no factor with him at this point in his life.

Plashcke is complete and utter tool when it comes to USC football and Pete Carrol. Anytime they talk about USC football on ATH and hes up, I mute it because he just says the same thing in different ways: USC football is the God of all football regardless of level and can do no wrong.

Plashcke is a tool to begin with. This is the same guy who said Oregon would beat Ohio State by 30 leading up to the Rose Bowl
