What a tough spot he was put in. People are going to tear him apart after this game, but the kid is going to be a VERY good QB in the future. Ranked #2 coming out of high school, only behind Matt Barkley, whom many people thought he should have been ahead of.

And as I'm typing he hits Jordan Shipley for a long TD pass.

Yeah, pretty much an impossible situation for Gilbert.

His receivers aren't helping him out much either.

If his receivers would help him out by making a couple difficult catches this game would look a lot better for him.

He is showing some real poise right now.

Impressive performance right now by the freshman QB. Hope he leads them to a good comeback.

This kid is going to be one of the best in the country next year. Amazing how much better he became after a half to learn.

Gilbert is growing up as this game progresses. With each completion, he gets more confident and he's doing it against the best defense in college football.

This kid will be a stud in the future.

Damn.

Tough break for him there. He had no chance since that guy came untouched.

He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Threw for like 12,000 yds., I saw him on tv a few times last year. Great upside, I expected him to play well at first then crumble in the 2nd half when reality set in, he proved what he is made of.

Although he through for 4 picks, I was very impressed by his performance. I mean #9 dropped a lot of passes, and that shovel pass should have been caught.

Deadspin on Gilbert:
Garrett Gilbert, the gawky 18-year-old. Should I be the one to say it? That instead of running up the score, Mack Brown should've gotten his backup QB some reps this year?
Discuss.

(I don't think it's that simple, but since it's already out there in the serious business that is the internet, I figured I would post it)

Agreed. You cant pin that all on him. Kid played a decent game and had a ton of dropped passes.

The shovel pass hit the running back in the shoulder pad from 3 yards away. It was unfortunate that the running back tipped it back up right to the Bama player, but it was still a bad pass.

I agree with you, that it's really not that simple. I would say OSU blew some opponents out this year, and there was plenty of opportunity for Bauserman to play a few minutes, but he didn't, because Pryor needs game reps.

I feel that Texas can't expect an injury, so why not give McCoy more and more game reps during blowouts?

The big problem I have was the play calling up until the end of the third quarter. Listen, this kid is young, I get that. But he's not a slouch at throwing the football. He's worked with these players in practice, he's made these throws. I thought last year he was slightly better than Barkley. That being said, I thought they could have opened up the playbook more. I think it really hurt them in the second quarter, because it was really easy for Alabama to play for the run on first and second down and then blitz on 3rd and 6, 3rd and 8 etc., because the gameplan for Gilbert was extremely basic and predictable.

Texas' defense kept them in this game, and I think playcalling may have cost them the game in the 2nd and most of the 3rd quarter. When they finally opened it up, they started scoring.

Great effort by this kid. With some seasoning and chance for mental readiness he will be a good one.

Herbie said Gilbert played in all games except Oklahoma, Nebraska, T-Tech, and 1 other one I forget, but still only had 24 pass atempts? dude was in a no win situation going against a Saban defense. Even Herbie said we have to cut him some slack, he did have a better second half.

what a tough spot to take the first meaningful snaps in your college career after you get very few in practice all season and probably 0 during all of bowl prep... he got better as the game went along. Looks like he has a good sized body with room to put weight on too. He'll get better, and he'll learn to keep his emotions in check a little bit better and will be a good QB for Texas

I just watched the replay about 5 times on ESPN. It hit the RB in the right in the hands. That kid has to catch it.
