Every year about this time of the year I get those letters .... From what looks like the gas, electric and water utilities. Almost like they are expecting the world worst spring time storms to roll in history.
However for $2.45 per month water, $3.25 electric and $2.75 gas I will be protected and all is well.
i always question the value of this offers?

I don't know what this means.

Our gas is budgeted and same every month. Electric is fair. Our water is fair but the fucking sewer rate is double what the water bill is and that is a rip off.

the utilities push to put an additional insurance rider per month for future reconnection, frontage line improvement and disaster recovery repairs to the house.

At $9 a month if it gives you the peace of mind on those potential things...then it's worth it to you

The only time I wished I had the insurance was back in 2000 when the gas line to my house (40 years old) had a leak in the front yard. Cost me $400 to have it repaired, and that was with me digging the access holes myself at the outdoor meter, and where the house line came off the street line. All the other estimates were $2000 and up.

Since the old pipeline was metal and the new line is plastic (and runs inside the metal), I won't be needing that insurance in my lifetime. I guess quite a few of the homes in our neighborhood have needed their original line replaced over the years.

Our phone line outside gets chewed by squirrels every 2 or 3 years, which is how often AT&T has to come out and repair at their expense - no need to have that insurance.

Water line break - now that's a rare occurrence in our neighborhood. When it does happen, it's almost always along the service line, not the house line. No need for that one, either.

I have always discarded these 'offers' ............just big money-makers for the monopolies, I mean utilities.
