I would highly recommend the Red Rising trilogy (Pierce Brown) if you're into sci-fi. He's working on a second trilogy in the series now, the first book is out later this year.

I've also started reading Robert Heinlein. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is great. I just finished The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, but I found out after I was mostly finished with the book that I probably should have read several other Heinlein novels first so it would make more sense. I did enjoy it, though. I will be starting Starship Troopers next.

...just finished 1812, Seal of Honor and The Twilight war. Very different writing styles in all three but all very interesting reads nonetheless.

I loved Starship Troopers. Completely different than the movie and he explores the authoritarianism way more in the novel.
I enjoy the alternate history genre and Harry Turtledove. My favorite of his is the Guns of the South.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'm a big fan of alternate history stuff. That said, I thought Man in the High Castle was pretty underwhelming. I loved the first season of the show but the book was meh.

Throwing The Forever War by Joe Haldeman into the mix as well. Great sci fi book written by a Vietnam vet. The book is essentially Vietnam in space, really interesting way to understand the solider's mindset. One of the few books I've read more than once.

The show is definitely better than the book imo.

I think I've read part of it. He has a collection of short stories and novellas I have where one of the two long ones is called something like "You Can't Go Home Again" which was about a mission leading to two main characters coming back to Earth to find out things have REALLY changed, leading to violence and the two deciding to re-enlist because they at least knew what they were getting into in space. And I recall reading that was part of The Forever War, but am not 100%. It was really good, though.

Yeah sounds about on par with the book.
