Good stuff gents.

Tell Shawn not to hate on the big fellas though. The 170 final at Darby last year was a bigger yawner than any of the HWT matches and was on par with a 106 Greco match between first year cadets. (I like Lawson and Terry, it was just an awful match to watch. Glad their match at the Schott had a lot more action).

P.s. Not sure if Frye can do a double back flip, but he can two hand reverse dunk a basketball. Not many HS heavyweights can say that. Maybe we can get him to do it after the 285 final at Darby.

Dust_E: I've been trying for five years to get my sidekick to understand the benefits and blessings of a sport that welcomes all body makes and sizes! We, as enthusiasts, should welcome, recognize, and celebrate these differences and use them as a recruiting tool within our hallways as we work to expose students to the greatest sport on the planet! But he's stubborn. :)

ps: I like how I was almost able to work in ITC's mission statement! #TeeHee

Also, nice shout out to Broskie in particular and "wrestling to win" in general. Too many kids get into survival mode when facing higher ranked opponents. Nice to see kids get after it and bag the trophy buck instead of merely trying to last 6 minutes.

The one thing I'll say in Shawn's defense is that this is definitely a down year at both 220 and 285 in the Central District. I can't remember a year when there were so few high end guys across both weight classes. That being said, I look forward to seeing who fills out the spots not occupied by Frye, Harris, Houston, and Morley. Should be very open beyond those 4 perhaps Hay from Westerville North.

Full disclosure: I have a bias toward the lighter / middle weights. This will be my one rant against the big guys, then I'll shut-up. Here it goes:

Central district has recently been pretty bad in the upper weights. It's not a "this year" thing. At the state tourney, the expected value of placers from each region would be 2 at each weight. Here are the number of state placers for 195, 220, and 285 at recent state tourneys:
2016: 1 @ 195 (5th), 1 @ 220 (4th), 1 @ 285 (1st) = 3 total (-3 vs. expected value)
2015: 1 @ 195 (6th), 1 @ 220 (3rd), 1 @ 285 (2nd) = 3 total (-3)
2014: 0 @ 195, 2 @ 220 (1st, 7th), 1 @ 285 (7th) = 3 total (-3)

So that's half of the expected value, each year.

The Central doesn't always get its expected value in total, but it has been "on" for two of the last three years: 26 placers in 2016 (-2 vs. expected value); 29 in 2015 (+1); 22 in 2014 (-6).

Upper-weight wrestling is is characterized by extremely limited technique, limited mobility, etc. Whenever someone describes how good an upper-weight guy is, it must be qualified with "for a heavy weight." "He has good technique, for an upper weight" ... "He moves well, for a heavy weight" ... "He's athletic, for a heavy guy." It's an admission that the upper weights are seldom actually good wrestlers. And within that sub-par group, Central district guys are usually sub-par.

I guess I'm voting with Shawn. :-)

Blast: Can't argue that the CD uppers haven't underperformed at the Schott recently, but that's really a separate issue.

The rest of your argument is really self-fulfilling. Upper weight wrestling is bad because people say it is. A Heavyweight who relies on throws is no more quilty of "extremely limited technique" than a lower weight guy who relies on single legs (most of them in my opinion). The difference is that most people would never describe a lower weight guy who only has a single leg as having "limited technique".

Watch the finals at the Schott. Was the Mattox/Donathan final really more exciting that Stencil/Campbell or Teacher/Vough? To me, Mattox/Donation was 6 minutes of one guy shooting and the other guy blocking & sprawling, hoping to land a front headlock and then getting behind to get his 2. Not bagging on either Mattox or Donation. Both are outstanding wrestlers and I appreciate what they do. I just found the match boring. The only thing that made it interesting to me was the stakes.

I guess I would just encourage people to try to appreciate the different styles. The wrestling at 106 is different from the wrestling at 152 which is different from the wrestling at 285. To me it would be pretty boring if they all wrestled the same....

I think it is more likely that we see Mattox at 152 to go after Carr than Jenkins. Word of mouth has it that Mattox is rather large right now. But I think you guys are right in that 145 will thin out a little some how some way.
