Around March madness, it is always asked..."Is this the year a #16 beats a #1?" So....what are the matches at the Darby District that have the greatest potential of seeing a #4 sectional placer upset a #1 sectional placer. I use the word "upset" only to indicate placements at sectionals......

I scanned the brackets and I don't see many at Darby. If I had to go out on a limb and pick one, I would go with Tate (MV) over Amador (HB) at 138.

I just couldn't find a lot of unexpected 4 seeds or vulnerable 1 seeds.

Osburn (WK - 126) is probably one of the strongest 4 seeds in the tournament, but he draws Lathem, and I don't see him winning that one.

A few other 1 seeds benefitted from generally soft Sectionals (Houston - Orange 220 and Harris - Zanesville 285, for example), but their 4 seed opponents aren't well equipped for the upset in my opinion.

Anytime a #4 is picked to defeat a #1 it is a long shot. But, as noted below, it can - and does - happen.

2015: #4 over #1
152: MA-4 Leapley (CC...HS) dec. WM-1 Vassar 14-13sv (a match Vassar would avenge in the conso-semis (go-to match).)
160: NE-4 Allen (DC) dec. Hess (GL) 7-2 (both failed to place.)
170: MA-4 Weirick (M) WBF Fitzpatrick (OL) 5:56 (both failed to place.)

So, can it happen? Yes. Does it happen often? No. Thrice out of 56 chances last year.

Predicting a #4 over #1 this year will be just as complicated. But I'll throw a few 4/1 matches that spark my interest...
113: NE-4 Saunders (GM) v. Harris (3V) - you can't blame me for that! (Or any others like it!)
132: WM-4 Collins (PN) v. W. Heard (M) - Collins (PN) is a former DP. Heard is a (albeit seasoned) freshman. Crazy things happen.
138: UA-4 Ben Tate (MV) v. Amador (HB) - former SQ in Tate as the 4. Could cause some problems for Amador.
145: UA-4 Wallace (WK) v. Young (DH) - I'm not sure why my eyes are being drawn to this match but they are.
160: NE-4 Wilson (LH) v. Leapley (CC...HS) - a rematch of the Comet Classic consolation final in which Wilson (LH) won 9-4.
170: NE-4 Buck (GM) v. H. Heard (M) - What!? ;)

I was able to come up with three to five that I see as "potential".

I only see 3 matches (#4 v #1) that have a potential lower seed winning:

126 - Osborne v Lathem; possible, but not likely

138 - Tate v Amador; very possible, but Amador coming down from 145 seems like a little too much for Tate

160 - Wilson v Leapley; the most likely, imo, but I'm a CC...HS guy, so I didn't pick that in my bracket pick'em!

If I were a betting man, ;), however, I'd say Wilson dec Leapley 15-13! :RpS_lol:

Totally missed Wilson vs. Leapley. Good call gents.

And Cruiser, I sincerely noodled on Buck vs. Heard for a while. Buck looked solid when I saw him at Marion Harding. Strong kid.

If Buck loses, he's walking home. As a coach, it is my job to motivate. I feel I have done my job. :D

Agreed.

Another one to watch is Carter vs Deluse at 182. I would not be surprised if Carter makes it interesting. I dont see the upset happening though, honestly. That being said, I do have Carter storming back in a big way on day two.

Hope Heard saw this and is motivated. I think you are encouraging your kid but by doing this in public motivates the other kid.

But thanks for all you do for #centraldistrict wrestling.

As a consolation, since he wrestled ok, I made him walk from the hotel to the restaurant and then back.

Tough loss but he'll bounce back.

Heard wrestled tough the whole way through. Best of luck to him for the rest of the tournament(s).

DustE: thanks for playing along.
