Rank them based on what? Vocally I think Cobain sucked, Vedder had the best tone, Cornell probably the best range. Weiland, and STP for that matter, often sounded like he was trying to imitate Vedder or Cornell (and doing it well enough to fool the untrained ear not familiar with these guys).

Cobain kind of sounds like Layne Staley trying to sing with a cat stuck in his throat.

You're right. I want to move Layne up but can't come up with a good reason, except Eddie comes across as a d-bag, sometimes.

Eddie has a better voice and it isn't close.

Layne does not have a good voice but it's unique and just works...similar in that regard to Tom Petty.

Yeah, I like AiC more than probably any of the groups the other singers were affiliated with, but as far as Layne goes, it was because his voice fit the vibe of the music perfectly, making it more of a perfect storm than anything else. Like, AiC was more than the sum of their parts because all the pieces fit together. With some of those other groups, the singer carried them more than Layne did AiC.

I'm with ya and AIC is my favorite band, no doubt. Who carried each other more - Kurt with Dave Grohl and Novoselic, or more Layne carrying Jerry Cantrell?

Hunger Strike is one of my all-time favorites....this contest goes to Cornell, with EV coming in a close second.

Grunge singers arent really that good of singers. THeir voice fits well with the type of music.

Will you please just shut the hell up. Name a famous band in which the singer does not fit the music.

Trent over Kurt....wow, never considered that one. I may even throw the (new) Marilyn Manson somewhere on that list, too. Maybe even ahead of Zack DLR.

Billy prob' is last for me.

I was really only a fan of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains as far as grunge went. Cornell is a very good singer and while Staley may not be the best singer, his voice is very strong and powerful and really fits with the Alice In Chains sound.
