Yeah, I get that. I am just saying it is shortsighted. So, what if he does get us 7 to 9 wins and we don't make the playoffs? Where do we go from there heading into the next season? We are still in a situation where we decide whether to draft a QB or not, and McClown is heading into next season staring down 37 years of age.

Bottom line, McClown is older than Brees, and pundits are saying Brees is done. Brees on his worst day is 1000000000000x better than McClown, and Peyton is getting killed for not having an heir to Brees. Tell McClown to take a ride on the pine.

To follow up on my post, it really is a playoffs or bust move imo and McClown aint a guy you want to go all in on.

It usually doesn't take long after a GM gets fired for the coach to be gone, too.

I don't see it that way. With McCown we are going to win 7-9 games. With manziel we are going to win either 3 games or 11. Pettine probably can't afford the 3 win season, so he's going with the 7-9 wins to help save his job.

Don't like it as a fan but Pettine knows what he's doing.

Ahh. Yes that's not a good idea. But who knows maybe Pettine will go with McCown this year to save his job then fully transition to JFF in the offseason.

Yeah I guess, just seems to stunt his growth IMO which I don't like. I also think it will blow up in his face when McClown starts throwing INTs every 10 drop backs.

I don't think Pettine will stick with McCown if he's throwing ints, unless we are winning despite of the Int's.

Pettine really isn't a dumb coach, like we've seen recently. He'll pull McCown if he's fucking up.

On the flip side of the "Pettine starting McCown to potentially save his job", if he started JFF and they went 3-13, could he possibly avoid being fired by citing how bad Manziel was? Doubtful in this "win now" league but possible?

Exactly. This is like s rookie season for johnny. Mccown is actually helping Johnny understand the mental aspect of the game something hoyer wouldn't do. They have a plan for Johnny and its for him to sit and learn the whole playbook and understand the right reads and such. Johnny isn't there yet he's still progressing. There is no doubt they are planning to get as many wins as possible with mccown and then go into next season with the hope Johnny has progressed and learn the in and outs to be the full time starter. Manziel is still only 22 years old it's not going to hurt to sit him a year and be mentored by a qb that knows the ins and outs of pretty much every system in the NFL.

I agree with what you guys are saying. I don't think McCown starting because he gives us the best chance to win now (assuming he plays like he did the first drive against NYJ) and Johnny being the future QB as early as next season are mutually exclusive.

Vikes committed to Bridgewater, Raiders to Carr... Now those guys have a year under their belt... Bucs are starting Winston... Titans starting Mariota.

You draft a QB in the first round, you better play the guy unless you have an established QB and are contending for a deep playoff run. But the Browns know better than everyone else....that's why we have a QB and coaching carrousel,squander draft picks year after year, and made the playoffs once in 15 years of futility.

I have no idea whether JFF will or won't make it but from a lot of accounts I've heard (and I'm sure others have probably heard) last year he was a deer in headlights who seemed to think the NFL would be a snap and everything would come to him. He didn't put in the work and put himself behind the 8 Ball (no pun intended).

If these coaches think he doesn't "get it" or feel that he eventually will "have it", I can wait until later in the season. I think we all know that McCown usually doesn't make it through a season in one piece. JFF will get his chance.

Also take into account they are coming off an 7-9 season. Just speculation but I'd imagine Haslam & Co might be a little pissed if Pettine said "hey Jimmy, I'm starting Manziel this year and we'll likely only win 2 or 3 games." Can't speak for Haslam but I don't take him as a patient man and I'd bet he'd expect progress instead of a major step back.

With that being said, like 90%+, I'd prefer they just throw JFF in there.
