Why do groups of people who want to be treated like 'everyone else', not be 'marginalized', etc segregate themselves in this way?

groups can label themselves as they wish ... If you're not interested in such a group screw them and move on... However if they want special treatment, special concessions and disrupted the area or infringe of others citizens rights then we have a problem no matter what the name of the group calls themself.

There's a difference between celebrating your heritage and wearing victimhood on your sleeve. I "suspect" that's the reason why wkfan pointed that out in his list.
But the premise of the whole segregating thing: I don't like prefixes. You're either an American or your not. Or, perhaps you have dual-citizenship. That's the only reason for using prefixes, IMO.

^^^^ I don't know, maybe it is. Initially, I think we have a hard time time understanding why others fight so hard for equality and inclusiveness only to segregate themselves and demand others take notice. Maybe it's partly media driven... After all there are ethnic festivals... Irish... German... Etc etc. It''s just a matter of being accustomed to the idea. Change is constant and inevitable, but people sometimes need time to adapt to it.

Oh and religious groups have been whining about being victims of religious persecution incessantly for the last couple of years...i.e. Because they single out homosexuality of all the sins in their religions.

I know I always get unbelievably pissed off when minority groups don't act exactly how I feel they should, so +1 on this. They all need to learn that their freedom stops exactly at the point where I've decided I've heard and/or seen enough!
