Interesting.

I may have missed it but with the distance it is away do they know about when it actually happened? T

Not sure, I have a hard time believing this is real. I understand your question though, did this happen 8,000 years ago and we're seeing it now? I'd assume that'd have to be the case. But who knows with black holes erupting light.

I havent see any articles on this from a scientific source like Phil Plait yet. Waiting for someone like him to break this down for me.

The notion of a black hole is pretty out there. It's accepted by those who are the best and the brightest in this field, but still seems crazy. And now they apparently just erupt light? It seems pretty out there. Not sure why you would have to question why I think that entire thing seems not real and out of science fiction.

Because I freely admit I don't know everything? Geez, I know every one is an expert here on everything. Sorry I don't pretend to be as well.

Do we know what wavelength the light is erupting? I just read an article about gravitational lensing + X-ray light spectrum allowing us to peer deeper into a black hole than ever before. Doesn't sound like this exactly the same obviously but wonder if the news stories are parallel with each other.

I interpreted your first post as doubting the existence altogether, not just having trouble wrapping your head around it.

We should all be thankful C4F is no longer a mod. We would all be thread banned.

Yes that would be correct. If it's 8000 ly away then we are looking 8000 years into the past. So technically no it didn't just happen haha.

Yeah, I know many times with space when we see it is so long after it happens. It is some very interesting stuff though.

Not so sure that is correct; a light year is a measure of distance, not time.

8,000 x 6 trillion miles = how far away this is.

A light year is the distance that light travels in one year. So if something is 1 light year away, it takes that light one year to travel that distance. So if something is 8,000 light years away, it takes light 8,000 years to travel that distance.

And serious question...where did you think the term "light year" came from???

No, I was using your quote as my answer to Quaker and then asking him.

Sorry, that was a bit confusing.
