So student body leaders and university officials removed propaganda from around the university because it went beyond free speech as well as containing vulgar language. IMO, the university unnecessarily opened a can of worms by bringing up free speech. Why not just say "hey you can't cuss so we're taking these down"?
"If you actually read through it, it seemed like it went way further than a free speech issue," said Student Government President Michael Slavens. "There were swear words and took it a little further than the average free speech should go."
Apparent forefather to America Michael Slavens can now determine when free speech is appropriate, too.

encouraged students to "go about your day without telling everyone about how 'different' you are.

The poster wasn't authorized by YSU and it wasn't posted by an actual group. Plus the fact it had vulgar language. YSU requires approval of posters. Of course people want to make it out to be not freedom of speech or hates on straight pride.

If you want it to continue to hang yes it has to be approved. Not that hard of a concept sleeper.

That may be the policy but there's no way it's the practice.

Well it was when I went there. I worked in the student gov office and we had to go around and take shit down. More of an annoyance but YSU isn't a large campus.

That's what I was getting at. If the posters were unapproved or contained vulgar language, why not just leave it at that? Why is the student body president trying to determine how far free speech should go?

Because if he had just said, "the posters have vulgar language" people would complain that they have the right to put up posters that have foul language because of free speech. If he had said, "the posters weren't approved" people would complain that they weren't approved because of the content and say that they were suppressing their right to free speech.

I'm sure someone complained that they had the right to put up the posters because of free speech and this kid just tried to sound smarter by saying, "it goes beyond free speech."

As for your last question...please show me a student body organization that DOESN'T determine how far free speech should go.

I'll have to agree with sherm that someone would say, "No big deal it's just the word shit". So they are saying freedom of speech doesn't mean you can be vulgar. Especially because this week was the English Festival with a ton of middle and high school kids around campus.
