[h=1]Cleveland State University will no longer fund wrestling, but will add lacrosse

Interesting to note Cleveland will be hosting the NCAA wrestling championships in a few years too.

F*ck Cleveland and CSU.

Lacrosse is a better product to sell. Sucks for wrestling fans/family etc. Smart from a business/athletic department side.

The AD played lacrosse and his wife coaches it. They have told the program they need $800,000 to cover the next two years and then $5 million in endowment to keep it going. Oh, they need the $800,000 by March 31st, 2016.

Based on what? I have been hearing for years now that Lacrosse is going to be the new main stream sport in this country, and it hasn't even been close to happening. Lacrosse's attendance has been flattening, meanwhile wrestling continues to sell out arenas for the NCAA tournament. Next year the NCAA tournament will be at MSG. Wrestling also costs far less than lacrosse. I like lacrosse, but to make this out to be a smart business decision (especially in NE Ohio where wrestling is very popular) just would not be accurate.

Also:

"CSU did not want to drop a sport but cannot afford the additional cost of about $900,000 a year to add two sports, because if it added lacrosse it would have to add a women's sport to meet federal Title IX requirements, officials said Monday."

1. Just another reason for me to say FUCK Title IX and

2. Just another reason why I LOL at people who think women are still at a disadvantage.

Yeah, that's what they call bullshit. You do not need 800k to run a wrestling program. The president is just trying to place the cost of adding another women's sport on wrestling, because he wanted to see his own fucking sport at his school.

My apologies. It's the not the President but the AD that played lacrosse and who's wife coaches it.

Most certainly, the choice to drop wrestling in favor of lacrosse appears to be dubious at best, but within the University's perogative. Most certainly Title IX DOES enter into this.

Most certainly this has nothing to do with CLEVELAND, and you are an idiot if you think it does.

Sometimes I think lacrosse only exists to give kids a chance to play D1 sports that never would have had the opportunity. I don't see it going anywhere due to the demographic that plays it.

This. The OP being a dipshit and hating Cleveland as a whole has nothing to do with CSU dropping wrestling.

Yes, but I don't know if there are any girl-only wrestling programs in high school or college. All that I've seen in Ohio have competed on the same team as the boys. Usually as cannon-fodder, but there have been a few decent ones. One won a match at state a couple years ago that I recall.

Ohio doesn't have sanctioned girls wrestling. I believe Texas and Hawaii does though. There is women's wrestling at the club college level, but not at the NCAA level.

There most certainly is women's wrestling at the collegiate level, although I don't know if Ohio colleges have any programs. Two Wayne County girls wrestle for Campbellsvile(Kentucky) and placed 2nd and 8th at nationals in their respective weight classes.

That would be club wrestling as I mentioned.

Way too expensive for all the schools to buy mud or KY jelly.

Just make it completely co-ed then and make everyone STFU.
