According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Sam Bradford will command in the range of $50 million guaranteed when he signs his contract as the No. 1 overall pick, most likely with the Rams.
The maximum value is expected to average $13 million annually. Matthew Stafford, as the No. 1 pick in 2009, received $42 million guaranteed and $12 million per season. Bradford is reportedly not willing to sign a pre-draft contract because he wants to see if the Browns make a move up the board to get him. Doing so would essentially cost Cleveland its entire draft.
This is why I backtracked on an initial comment about thinking the Browns WOULD trade up for Bradford. With the new CBA having to be worked out, I'm expecting a new rookie wage scale. Why shell out $50 million THIS year when, if they don't go QB, they could possibly get their franchise QB for $30 million next?
The "give up their entire draft" comment is hogwash. The Browns are reportedly the ONLY team who has expressed the interest in moving up. If the Rams REALLY want out of the #1 spot, they have no leverage. If the price wasn't right, for the Browns, they wouldn't make the move and the Rams are STUCK with a QB that they aren't really sold on.
