Dover didn’t run away with this one, but the Tornadoes got just enough help for the M&M combo to hold off Wooster for an eighth straight win.

Anthony Monaco and Marcus Mamarella combined for 51 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Tornadoes to a 62-51 win over the Generals in a non-league game Saturday night.

The win lifts the Tornadoes to 8-0 on the season and gives them a week off before returning to action next Saturday.

“Monaco and Mamarella had great games,” said Dover coach Bob Von Kaenel. “But we had a lot of guys do a lot of things under the team approach tonight.

“We had guys like Kyle Dummermuth, who accepted a challenge to guard their best player (6-foot-4 junior Alex LaLonde) and did a great job.

“He’s (LaLonde) their top scorer and if Dummermuth hadn’t fouled out, he wouldn’t have gotten double figures.”

Dover led just 24-20 at halftime, but stayed in control throughout the second half.

It was the start of the fourth quarter, though, where the Tornadoes really stepped it up.

Leading 38-29 going into the final four minutes, Monaco got a quick bucket and two free throws and Mamarella answered a Wooster bucket with a three-point play off an offensive rebound to give Dover a 45-31 lead. The Generals didn’t get the lead under double digits until the final minute.

Monaco scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a 9-of-10 showing at the line down the stretch, and Mamarella had seven in the final period.

Just when it looked like no one else would score, Ian Drapcho stepped up with a pair of big buckets and Colton Zahner hit a pair of free throws.

“I thought we did a good job against their pressure,” said Von Kaenel, whose team turned the ball over just once in the fourth quarter. “We did a good job of looking up and finding open guys and they did a good job of knowing when to go to the bucket and when to pull it out.”

Wooster, which falls to 3-3 on the season, got 15 points from Duke Price and 11 from LaLonde.

“This was a good opponent for us,” the Dover coach said. “They had size and they had a couple wing players that could really jump.”

Dover shot the ball well all night, connecting on 21 of 38 shots from the floor. After missing their first five shots from the line, the Tornadoes finished 17 for 25, including a 12-for-13 performance in the fourth quarter.

Dover also dominated under the glass, outrebounding the visitors 32-21.

Now the Tornadoes have a week off before returning to action with a game against John Glenn.

“This is where it’s going to get tough,” Von Kaenel said. “John Glenn is 6-1 and then we get back into the league with Coshocton.

“We’ve been pretty vanilla, but we’re at a point in our season where we have to improve. We’re going to have to add some things and start getting better.”
