In the early morning hours of Nov. 16, a fire broke out on Union Street in our small college town of Athens, Ohio. Thankfully, no one appears to be seriously injured at this time.
Unfortunately, the businesses on the affected block - The Union, Jackie O's, Campus Sundry, Kismet, Smoke Zone Smoke Shop, and Jack Neal Florist - suffered considerable damage. At this time, some are reporting a near-complete loss, others extensive water and smoke damage, but all likely will need to be closed for some time as repairs are made.
Our goal is to raise as much money as possible to help the employees of these businesses mitigate their lost wages while repairs are made. No household is immune to the rising costs of winter and the holiday season. These folks, many with families, have been put in their current situation through no fault of thier own.
Our plan is to divide any raised funds equally among those employees out of work due to this tragic event.
Hopefully, with the unbelievable power of the Athens and Ohio University communities the day's events will be soon seen as an opportunity to bring us all closer together through the love, support, and goodwill we know our community is capable of.

Sucks about Jackie O's. They make some good beer. Bummer they will be closed for awhile now.

I think Jackie O's might still be able to brew beer. I heard almost all of the damage was on the kitchen and food side of the place.

You are correct. Just looked it up and the brewery is in downtown Athens. It was just the public house and brew pub that was damaged. They will still be making beer.sportchampps;1675401 wrote:I think Jackie O's might still be able to brew beer. I heard almost all of the damage was on the kitchen and food side of the place.

I know some of the girls affected. Really rough for them. Thankfully gofundme has raised about 1k for them (6 of them), but that still doesn't cover most of their loss.

It is unbelievable that no one was killed with the fire occurring at night.

Crazy to me. My dad wouldn't let me live off campus unless I got renter's insurance. It's dirt cheap, too...even for broke college kids.1_beast;1675688 wrote:doubtful. Broke college kids.

So lets see...they lost the bean bag chair, the shelves made out of concrete blocks and planks, the sofa somebody else had sat out by the curb, the lava lamp and oh yeah that brand new bag of weed...devastating.

Been a long time since you've been to a college there man. Don't forget about the flat screen TV in each person's room as well as in the common room, the laptops that each person has, and...since it's girls...all of the clothes in every closet. Even more reason why they should have had renters insurance.Tiernan;1675755 wrote:So lets see...they lost the bean bag chair, the shelves made out of concrete blocks and planks, the sofa somebody else had sat out by the curb and the lava lamp...devastating.
Definitely a bigger loss than when you were college age and everyone would have just lost their record collection and typewriters.
