So basically Marshall has played a mid-major schedule and is undefeated in doing so. So far it only proves that the Herd is one of the best if not the best mid-major program this season.Ironman92;1675949 wrote:Not sure...their conference is cruddy and MAC teams like OU and Akron aren't great this year.
Here is what I have on them...
Miami Ohio (2nd most lopsided home loss, 3 most lopsided loss of the season)
Rhode Island (2nd most lopsided loss)
Ohio U (most lopsided loss)
Akron (most lopsided loss)
Old Dominion (most lopsided loss beat by 42 at ODU....ODU lost at NC State by 12...NC State lost by 15 to FSU)
Middle Tennessee (most lopsided loss) Middle Tennessee lost at Minnesota by 11...Marshall beat MTU by 25
Florida International (most lopsided loss...more than Louisville beat them)
Florida Atlantic (Marshall's worst game and beat FA by 19.....FA and Arizona both played Texas-San Antonio and FA beat them worse than Arizona)
Southern Miss (lost at Miss St by 49, lost at Alabama by 40...played Marshall at Southern Miss and Marshall beat them by 46)
Rice (6-4) 41-14
At UAB next week (UAB lost at Miss St by 13)
Vs Western Kentucky (beat Navy just like Notre Dame did)
Will play 9-3 Louisiana Tech in C-USA Championship game
Unfortunately even with the resume' you just constructed, there's simply not much meat there for the committee to chew on. Had the Herd played at least one Top 25 team and won or perhaps played a couple of above average teams from the Power 5 and beaten them, they might at least receive a Top 25 ranking.
It'll be interesting to see what bowl game Marshall is invited to and how they'll perform there.

I just cannot understand how TCU is ranked ahead of Baylor. My god if Ohio State was ranked behind a team they beat I would be beyond pissed

Because you don't have a Heisman trophy candidate like Northern Illinois did the last couple years. Jordan Lynch was the only reason the Huskies got so much loveIronman92;1675931 wrote:They have a conference....it's not good. Remember when Boise St. couldn't get anyone to play them early on? Hell the big 10 wouldn't play Marshall back in the Pennington/Moss years. I can't speak intelligently of who they have tried to schedule but them scheduling Ohio U and Akron seem quite appropriate. I have no clue why they left the MAC...it's perfect. Was conference USA one of the main conferences a few years back (I think they might have been the biggest of the non-major)
All I do know is if you look through their 10 games so far that Marshall not only had any hiccups but they've handed those teams their worst losses or beat those teams just like some of the big shot SEC teams. They are undefeated with no let downs.
NCAA basketball seeds teams like Marshall #3-#5. I understood them not being mentioned in the first couple.

If I'm reading it right (can't say for sure I am) if Marshall stays undefeated or possibly (but probably unlikely) loses 1 they will be the highest ranked team of the non-power conferences and be placed into one of the New Year's Day bowls.believer;1675969 wrote:So basically Marshall has played a mid-major schedule and is undefeated in doing so. Not under the playoff committee. They rose up in the other polls and were in the BCS formula.Classyposter58;1675976 wrote:Because you don't have a Heisman trophy candidate like Northern Illinois did the last couple years. Jordan Lynch was the only reason the Huskies got so much love

If they are it will be like the NIU against the Gators a few years ago, not pretty.Ironman92;1675977 wrote:If I'm reading it right (can't say for sure I am) if Marshall stays undefeated or possibly (but probably unlikely) loses 1 they will be the highest ranked team of the non-power conferences and be placed into one of the New Year's Day bowls.
Look, I grew up a Herd fan myself. Saw Moss in person as a kid. Saw Leftwich play as well.
But, Marshall has no legs to stand on. They have not played anyone from the Power 5, nor anyone from the AAC.
Maybe if they could have caught ECU while they were ranked that would have made a huge difference.
And, while they have won, they have not dominated, ie. covered every game.
Even a schedule like last year would have been great, they played VT. Or, hell the game against WVU would have been great this year.
If they are put in a New Years Bowl, I think they will take the slot away from a more deserving team.
But ,I hope they win out and dominate the last few games.

Herby on Mike & Mike this morning has thrown another metric into the consideration process...it used to be "SOS" and "total body of work" but now he's got "who would you not want to play at the end of the year on a neutral field?" That qualifier could obviously help the Buckeyes (if) they win out. Still think they end up #5 in that case but I'm wavering...down to 85% sure they don't get in.

Agree. Especially after TCU just struggled to beat a very poor KU team. I thought it would be other way around, TCU dropping below OSU, not Baylor. But we'll take it either way.Classyposter58;1675975 wrote:I just cannot understand how TCU is ranked ahead of Baylor. My god if Ohio State was ranked behind a team they beat I would be beyond pissed

I don't gamble or keep up with the betting lines.....how many of the 10 games haven't they covered? Has there been a team in the history of college football dominate every game?ptown_trojans_1;1675989 wrote:If they are it will be like the NIU against the Gators a few years ago, not pretty.

Anyways, yes they would be taking a NYD game from some more deserving teams but I'd still like to see it.

They haven't played a single remotely legit team. If Ohio wins their final game, they at least will have one non-conference bowl possibility with a 6-6 MAC team, but that's an accomplishment on the lines of beating a good I-AA team.Midstate01;1675947 wrote:Didn't I see marshall has a sos that is like bottom 5 in all of cfb?

The only thing correct about this post is that their schedule sucks.ptown_trojans_1;1675989 wrote:If they are it will be like the NIU against the Gators a few years ago, not pretty.

I don't know if that will even happen, but I'm guessing at least 5 years of this current format.

I'm not so sure MSU gets in over OSU if they win out. Yes, the'll have a win over Ole Miss as well. But OSU will also be a conference champ with a victory against Wisconsin (most likely they'll be the other team after they beat Nebraska).
MSU meteoric rise was attributed to back to back to back wins over top 10 teams... but as it turns out Texas A&M and LSU weren't really that good, and neither was Auburn but at least Auburn is still ranked.
So MSU and OSU will have very comparable victories.
What OSU has going for it for the tie breaker would be being a conference champion while MSU doesn't even play in the conference championship (Committee is said to give weight to conference championship games). Also OSU has been playing arguably the best football in the country after recovering from a new line, new QB and new RB.

I'm really curious to see how our defense handles Melvin Gordon. We have not been great at tackling. OSU obviously has to get by Wisconsin before they need to worry about making the playoff.

Yeah, after watching Gordon last weekend, I don't even care about a playoff berth right now. I care about getting past Wisky.FatHobbit;1676091 wrote:OSU obviously has to get by Wisconsin before they need to worry about making the playoff.

Obviously I'm speaking in hypothetical terms. My focus as no effect on the teams. I actually do like that we aren't 4th in the polls yet as it will help the team keep an edge for the next few weeks.FatHobbit;1676091 wrote:I'm really curious to see how our defense handles Melvin Gordon. Personally I think OSU is in if they win out. The committee could use the TCU bye this week for OSU to jump them like they did with Baylor. A Minnesota win over Nebraska would be a big help!

Wouldnt be shocked at all. Nebraska is far and away the biggest farce in the top 25.se-alum;1676101 wrote:Personally I think OSU is in if they win out. The committee could use the TCU bye this week for OSU to jump them like they did with Baylor. A Minnesota win over Nebraska would be a big help!
