I have made it a habit of answering telemarketers. Usually, the number on the caller ID is "Not Provided" followed by an 800 (or 877) number. I answer every time!

Today, it was the Columbus Dispatch. After introducing himself, he asked if I'd be interested in trying it out. I said as plain as possible, with a slight edge, no. He asked, "Why?". I stated "Simple. Your coverage of high school wrestling, and college wrestling for that matter, is pathetic. The coverage in the 90's was incredible, and is what is deserved. And to be honest, I wish there was a way I could help you out. Would you like me to continue on this matter?"

He said no, and wish me a fine day.

This sport deserves better than what it is receiving. And I say that as I am - along with my trusty sidekick - trying to do what we do.

Excellent "Mighty Cruiser"!
Prime example of how the dispatch failed to even mention the wrestling tournaments at the Ohio State Fair.
They mentioned the boxing, dancing and cheerleading competitions.
The only reason we get the dispatch is for the coupons.

Newspapers are a dying breed.

Hope this helps.

I hear that the Dispatch coverage of HS wrestling is terrible, but this is a pretty good thread so far.

Dispatch online used to let you view articles for free.....then limited it to 10/mth.....now 5/mth!

The Dispatch can kiss my a**!!

???

Are you suggesting there isn't value to their service and they should therefore be providing it for free to you?

Since I only read the sports section and they don't provide that service, yes, I think an article or two a day isn't too much to ask. I could be wrong though, lol!

I'd GLADLY pay the buck or $1.50 for the paper if every Tuesday, I knew there would be a full page, or complete two-page write-up - with color photos - somewhere in the sports section.

Con: I enjoy paying for service provided! And that's my point with not buying the Dispatch...it provides me with zero service. Just about every story they print contains info I can get elsewhere. And sometimes, for free. And I don't want 8 different stories on Buckeye football. Some do. ...and they are the ones who buy the newspaper.

Again, I meant what I said. I'd love to help them. I'm seriously considering offering an article per division to them each Monday night/Tuesday morning. These articles will look back at the past weekend's competitions, complete results, along with a few pictures if I can get them, and then maybe do a spotlight piece on a few wrestlers. Whatevs. I probably won't have time for that pipe dream.

I understand your point. Willingness to pay for a service is understandable. Thinking a service should be free is another.

If they don't provide what you desire then you have all the power to not patronize them.

If it's not football or basketball u can count on very little coverage from the dispatch until the state rolls around.

Even the state coverage is about worthless anymore from the Dispatch. The used to run full page coverage per division each day of the state meet, now we don't get a full page all together.
