...and surrounding areas due to elevated Mycrocystin levels found in water treatment influent.
Hours after the city of Toledo posted an early-morning do-not-drink-or-boil alert to its Facebook page, telling residents that toxic levels of microcysten – released by algae blooms located in Lake Erie – was found in water at the Collins Park water-treatment plant, Ohio Gov. John Kasich declared a State of Emergency for Toledo and the surrounding areas, including Fulton County.

as a side, I hate that the Toledo Blade article has "boiling not recommended" but the article doesn't say why. As the Plain Dealer mentions, boiling will only increase the concentration of toxins.

Boy this is really crazy. Hearing that Columbus Kroger's are out of water and there were traffic jams on 23 heading up to Ann Arbor. If they don't fix this soon we're going to have a serious situation. Bowling Green is the closest town where you can go out to eat

Just another example of why you should keep several cases of water for emergencies.

Wonder if those survival straws work in a scenario like this.

Since so many refrigerators now have ice makers and water dispensers, I wonder how you sterilize or clean that out? I wonder if the filter on the fridge would purify the water.

Microcystins are peptides produced by cyanobacteria, so no, filters will not filter toxins. Those mechanisms use adsorption which generally improve the taste of water but do not 'purify' it.

In my opinion the possibility that someone will become sick from this infiltration is minimal but it is not worth anyone taking a chance. Ice cubes and water that may have been contaminated should be discarded to avoid illness. Water treatment facilities do not treat biological molecules but definitely test for them..........hence this warning.

It'll be interesting with the light winds and stagnant water to see if the concentrations go up

Laugh at those that prepare for situation like this but this is real and can happen as those in Toledo can testify. Wonder when the shooting and lotting begins.....

if this was going to be a quick fix by Sunday, the National Guard wouldn't be called in, sure they are there to support and distribute water now....

Just called Monroe to make reservations and asked about the water. They said there's is fine, and they are only 15-20 min north of Toledo. Seems to be pretty isolated. I've heard Oregon is fine as well.
