Players are off.

Supposedly there is rain on the way, which means it should soften up the greens some. Very interested to see how the course plays because it is totally different than it was in 99 & 05.

Course is finally set up the way Pinehurst was intended. I think it's great and can't wait to see it in person on Sunday.

It will be a shit show next week for the women's US Open next week though.

I like Spieth to get his first major here.

I actually feel bad for the women. When you consider how rough these courses look after a tournament as far as divots and such there is no way it can be in this kind of shape within 4 days of the tournament end Sunday.

I think the idea of having them back to back was cool, but practically it is a shitty deal for the girls.

Rory/McDowell/Web Simpson are about to tee off.

That's a good pairing with 3 recent champs.

Yup. It's a great idea. But it's just not feasible, IMO. I think with a month in between it could work, but even then it would be hard.

Love seeing Rickie in the knickers and argyle as a tribute to Payne.

Phil birdied his first hole of the day at 10.

I want him to win bad, but I have a feeling he is going to struggle. He just wants it too much, and he doesn't do well under that kind of pressure.

Youngster from England out in the lead early. Very solid player.

My buddy and I do a major pick 'em. 1 player each from 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 50+. My team this year (aka guys I'm rooting for now):

1-10: Kuchar
11-20: Furyk
21-30: Patrick Reed
31-40: DeLaet
50+: John Senden

The Open is so much more watchable with the renovation than the old days when you missed the fairway by a foot and all you could do is wedge out. At least now the guys can sometimes get the ball to the green depending on the lie.

Scoring is right about where it should be, and will likely gravitate towards par as the weekend comes and it gets dry and burnt out. The greens this morning were really holding shots.

I like Spieth to be right there all week and finish 3 shots back for his 64th Top 10 of the year.

You don't hear a lot of arguments for women's golf.

But yes, someone didn't think it through or they don't give a shit about how it is for the girls....guessing the latter

Made it play the way it should. Donald Ross is probably the best course designer ever though so it's good on them to trend back towards his original concepts, just look how awesome Inverness is

How the hell are they even gonna play this course? Scores are gonna be insane playing a mens setup unless the tees are significantly pushed up

It's going to play like 6600 yards for the women. Which, I believe, is fairy long.

It rained last night. The Golf Channel guys are talking about how good the scoring conditions are right now for the morning group and that they think a good number is out there.

If Kaymer can shoot another under par round this morning (he goes off at 8:00) he could conceivably run away and hide by the time the afternoon guys come out and the course starts drying out for the weekend.

Kaymer birded his first hole to get to -6.

Scoring is good right now for the guys out early.

Kaymer just drove the green on the short par 4 and 2 putt moved to -9.

Guys have collapsed before so it's not inconceivable he comes back to the field on the weekend, but having just won the Players and looking really dialed in right now I would be surprised if the wheels just totally came off.

At worst he's building a hell of a cushion in that he is so far under par even shooting a pair of 74's would leave him still -1.

Poor Phil has to want to blow his brains out right now. He's going to try and get aggressive now in the afternoon since even par isn't going to do it and will likely shoot 74 because he's pressing.
