No one of consequence would stay for their senior season

Also lets not cheapen the best regular season in sports. Missouri and OSU were good but no way did they deserve to play for a title, yet an 8 team playoff would have let them
You reduce the number of reg. season games.

Why even reduce the amount of games. In the old system we waited until the end of the first week of January to watch the title game. I think it's ok to have two extra weeks of playoff games in December...

It wouldnt force an exodus to the NFL.

Let's not forget....there are HS kids in ohio playing 13,14,15 games a season.

CFB is the least intrusive of the major sports in terms of games during the week. Most are on the weekends.

Didn't Auburn beat Alabama? By logic, we've already concluded that Auburn is better than Alabama; why do they deserve another shot?

But you can't show that anyone from the rest of the field is better than Alabama...which is the point that two of the top four teams could theoretically come from the same conference. It's very feasible.

Every other level of college football has a 4 or 5 game playoff.

So using your logic only undefeated teams should be in the 4 team playoff?

No but we play the regular season for a reason, and that is to filter which teams are the top in the country. Otherwise, let's just skip the regular season, have teams play 2 or 3 games and then just decide which teams look like they are one of the top 4 teams. I mean come on man LOL.

You can't show Alabama is better than any of the teams they didn't play either. What you can show is Auburn is better than Alabama and as champions of the SEC they are the best team from the SEC. What we don't know is, is Auburn better than a B1G team or a B12 team? The only way to find out is to pit them against each other in a playoff system. Why does Alabama deserve a second shot?

Burden of proof is on you.

In all seriousness, they could deserve a shot because Team A losing to Team B in the regular season does not always equal Team B being better than Team A. Plus, an upset in a conference championship game could lead to a watered down playoff using your scenario. Undefeated B1G team gets upset by a two-loss team in the B1G championship and now that previously undefeated team doesn't deserve a shot in the playoffs? Nah, I'm cool with letting the four best teams in regardless of conference.

True.

But if there are not 4 undefeated teams in the country you then have to quantify the losses for some teams. In this scenario, Alabama. Their only loss was on a fluke, crazy, amazing play at the end of the game to a team you have in the 4 team playoff.

That loss has to look much better than pretty much any other 1 loss team.

A playoff should have the best teams in it, and yeah there are times when 2 of the best 4 teams could possibly reside in the same conference. I see it a fair number of times on a much, much smaller scale in our conference in one of the divisions. There are a number of years it is pretty clear the best team teams in the state in that div were from the same conference. It just happens and can happen in CFB.

So why even bother playing the game? Just award every team a national championship each year since beating a team doesn't mean you are better. Such flawed logic.

Except there is no way to prove that the two best teams are from the same conference. Just because the SEC has the biggest media deals and get unsubstantiated high preseason rankings doesn't mean they have the best two teams in the country. The conference champion is the filter; I don't care if the conference champion as deemed by the conference has 4 losses and the team they beat in the championship game now only has 1. You are the not the best team from your conference therefore you cannot be the best team in the country.
