Wow. I did not see this coming. I'm not so sure that this is a good move.

I don't think this is a good move at all... this will definitely hurt their program. They weren't a big destination to begin with.
This definitely doesn't help the team prepare.
Does Leach take a year off or does he get an offer somewhere else?

If you're going to put a kid in a closet don't let him be the son of an ESPN announcer.

I did. They saved themselves $400,000 by doing this. If he is there tomorrow, 12/31, and fired he gets an 800,000 bonus. Since they fired him today they just have to pay 1.6 million or 400,000 per year left on the contract instead of 2 million.fan_from_texas wrote: Wow. I did not see this coming. Leach filing an injunction on his employer pretty much sealed it. A working relationship can't realy last after an employee files an injunction on his employer.

I wonder just what he actually did to this James kid. Texas Tech has been looking for ways to fire this guy for 2 yrs now. Do you think this didnt get blown out of proportion just becasue it was the James kid? TT and Mike leach were at odds for awhile now. Did they manufacture a way to fire him and not have to buy him out?

They still have to buy him out at 400k per year left (4 years). So 1.6 million dollars. Like I said, if they didn't fire him today he would have received a bonus tomorrow making the buyout 2.0 million.september63 wrote: I wonder just what he actually did to this James kid. What??? do you think Leach isn't going to sue? That will cost the University millions and much more than if they would have just payed him the money.the_system wrote:I did. From what I have read so far Leach is probally going to be a very rich man.

What exactly do you think he is going to sue them for?

You don't think putting a kid in a closet is justifiable termination?

He can sue them, but he probably isn't going to win the suit

No doubt the closet is, but they could fire him for the hell of it if they wanted to. Coaches get fired every season in the middle of their contracts. Charlie at ND did just this year. That's why there are buyout stipulations in their contracts. Mike Leach will get his money guaranteed to him in writing and nothing more. And why should he? He signed the contract too.ytownfootball wrote: You don't think putting a kid in a closet is justifiable termination?

I don't think it is. Is putting the kid in the closet worse than making someone run sprints until they puke?? The kid was not giving the effort expected of him and he was reprimanded. Maybe stuffing kids in closets will become the go to technique of punishing kids who aren't performing. Don't be surprised if those little storage sheds pop up on football fields all across the countryytownfootball wrote: You don't think putting a kid in a closet is justifiable termination?

Zero surprise here. From the way TT was handling this, you knew it was coming from a mile away. June Jones, anyone?

LOL I'm just making the point that suing for wrongful termination would be a "pie in the sky" lawsuit that would be an embarassment for Leach. He should quietly go away and not pursue this any further.

Could be June Jones. He'd be a nice fit but is getting up there in age. I'm thinking more of a Kevin Sumlin. He's done an awesome job with Houston and their offense is even more pass-happy than TTU's. I watched a game where the Houston QB threw the ball 75 times in one game.gorocks99 wrote: Zero surprise here. From the way TT was handling this, you knew it was coming from a mile away. I hope Texas Tech is content with going back to being irreleveant over a whiny player and father who thought that they were entitled to something more than the other players.

If they get the right coach, they won't be going to irreleveant any time soon. Too many good athletes to recruit out of Texas.elbuckeye28 wrote: I hope Texas Tech is content with going back to being irreleveant over a whiny player and father who thought that they were entitled to something more than the other players.

I saw this coming, but I can easily see Leach suing much like Jim O'brian and getting a nice reward in addition to what he is getting bought out for.

IMO the only reason they fired him was because of the $800,000 bonus. Now they've just saved a bunch of money....Leach predicted this would happen

Texas Tech is generally not a destination for top coaches. Leach basically put Texas Tech on the map, and the AD has spent the last year trying to get rid of him. That makes the desination even less attractive to coaches.the_system wrote:If they get the right coach, they won't be going to irreleveant any time soon. Personally it sounds like the James kid was a vagina. You get put into a garage during practice and you call daddy to complain? Give me a break. My college coach did 10X worse than this.

I expect Leach will sue and the university will settle. If they really planned to fire him to save $800k, someone, somewhere e-mailed someone else about it. That's a pretty damning thing to turn up in discovery, and it's not the best sort of press, either. They'll settle for an undisclosed amount.

I saw this on someone's status on the book "TTU hires a coach that was accused of choking a player, yet they fire one for putting one in a closet".
Sounds more and more like a money situation than anything. Leach will find a better gig now.
