What the hell did O'Brien expect he was getting into when he took this job? He knew exactly what he was getting into. If he didn't, then he isn't very bright. I don't blame him for leaving. It was pretty obvious where he really wanted to end up. Back in the NFL. As for PSU, when you hire someone from the NFL, you are taking a chance they are going to bolt back to the NFL. College coaching is completely different than NFL and many of those who go from NFL to college, don't like doing exactly what O'Brien was complaining about..which is basically kissing ass to kids and boosters on a consistent basis. It is what it is and he should have known what he was getting into.

To complain about having to deal with boosters and the rigors of recruiting is dumb.

That's a very huge part of being a college coach.

BOB is a decent NFL coach that was out of his element in the first place. He picked up a couple mill for a couple years serviceable effort and then got back to what he's good at. Fkn Penn St should be glad they didn't go 0-24 those two years. Nobody of any renown will touch this now.

PSU is doomed and the only way they find success is hiring some brilliant young football coach. That means making the right decision and forgetting about Jo-Pa.

Even if PSU gets lucky and hires someone to quickly rebuild the program, whoever it is will end up leaving for a better job anyways.

PSU will be equal to Illinois football (at best) for years.

Most of this. He probably thought he knew what he was getting into and how it would differ from the NFL, it ended up being worse/more than he thought, and was fortunate to have an easy out back to what he likes/is good at in the NFL.

Haha they suck for a few more years and it's gonna be real interesting to see a completely empty stadium like that

Their attendance has been on a downward spiral for a few years. I agree it'll be interesting to see how far it drops off.

I think O'Brien had the plans all along to bolt for the NFL. PSU was a perfect opportunity to show that he could be a head coach and it was also easy to leave the school since they are on a 5 year probation.

I don't think the PSU gig is as bad as people are claiming it to be. Sounds like they'll probably get a year knocked of the bowl ban, so they really only have one more season they won't be able to go to a bowl. They have a kid that's going to be a really good QB. They could be competitive on a national level in 2 years.

The Penn State coaching gig - despite the sanctions - is still a very attractive prospect.

No way will Penn State allow that stadium to go unfilled not to mention that the Penn State fans are extremely loyal to this team. I laughed at the "downward spiral" comment on attendance above. It is true that attendance is - um - "down" but holy shit, they're still planting almost 100,000 butts in those seats despite the sanctions. And PSU still had winning seasons the past 2 seasons despite some talent bolting for other schools because of the sanctions.

Some sanctions have already been lifted and I have a hunch the bowl ban will be lifted after the 2014 season.

There was a lot of talk after the Sandusky flap that PSU would see losing seasons for quite a few years and they STILL put a decent program on the field.

BOB's departure is not unexpected and you can bet PSU fans will still come to the games. Even if they only put 80,000 butts in the stands over the next few years that's still far more attendance than a lot of other schools in the B1G produce even in good years.

Trust me...PSU will be just fine.

Penn State is the worst and so are the higher ups. I'd pass on that job if I was anyone with decent coaching ability.

His dad basically said that he wants to meet the new coach before he makes a decision. His dad made it sound like if they quickly hired a decent name that he will stay. Although with the stories of how badly Schiano treats players, you gotta wonder if Hack is thinking "Anyone but Schiano"

But if PSU starts being average continually, they won't fill that place up annually however. Maybe for teams like UM and OSU, but I think there were probably 20k empty seats at the games honestly this season. Not all 96,000 showed up

This is true. Kid seems pretty loyal though. He was willing to come in and play his entire career without ever having the opportunity to win a bowl game, let alone a NCG.

Hack will stay. He's just too good to sit a year. Makes no sense.

He's got one more year and then he's gone anyway. No way he goes somewhere to sit for a year.

This would be my thoughts on the situation as well. After how badly he fucked up things up with the Buccaneers, and how "in the know" everyone is these days I wonder if he gets another high profile job.

Different dynamic between the NFL and college though. I just don't think the NFL guys liked how they were treated like college guys.

I meant more along the lines of rigging the captain vote. Leaking the fact that Josh Freeman had a drug problem, ans basically doing anything he can to undermine the success of his QB is gonna hit home with a lot of players, especially QB's.
