Fail on me. Can a mod move this thread to the serious business forum?
I know there have been threads like this in the past, but a lot changes every 4 months when it comes to technology. I was thinking about how much I pay for cable TV, and started to get pissed that I overpay for a bunch of channels IDGAF about. I mainly just watch sports, and the news. There are a few shows here and there, but most I can get online the next day it came online. I have passwords to family accounts to HBOGO, Starz online, and Showtime online.
I know I will be receiving the chromecast for xmas, but would buying a ROKU in addition to it be an overkill? Has anyone else gone the cable free route?
Cue dlazz's fail post.

I was cable free for two years until I moved in October.... loved it. I would go back to that if I could.
I have roomies now, so I don't mind having it....but I'm still indifferent. We could get rid of it and I wouldn't mind at all.
No cable was great. It did suck for sports, but streaming is always an option. I got by on Netflix and an occasional Hulu. It also increased my music listening and DJing, which wasn't a bad thing.
Not sure if a Roku is needed along with Chromecast, but I'd definitely get Netflix. People hate on it a lot...not sure why. I think the selection is fine. Torrents are also your friend.

Anyways, to add something to the discussion, I'm moving next week and currently spend ~135 on cable and internet. Probably going to keep the the internet (turbo something) and just drop down to whatever the basic cable package is. I have HBOgo and Netflix as well as watch ESPN.

Like my cable, but that's mainly because my provider--Buckeye CableSystem--is the best.

cable free. It is sometimes difficult to catch some games on ESPN without cable but not so difficult for me, I like alternative sports like soccer and cricket especially cricket. If you do not care that much about sports then leaving cable is really easy. Unless they drop the prices drastically I will not be going back to cable.

I was literally going to make a similar thread.
I currently pay $155 for TWC TV/Internet. Ridiculous.
Directv guy was sold me pretty good. I have a week and a half to cancel the installation.
I'd be paying $51 for the first year for DTV's choice package. $86 the 2nd year. Significant change(first year, at least) from the $90 I pay now.
I'd still need the $65 internet from TWC.
DTV offers me some benefits over TWC.
Now, we subscribe to Netflix and Amazon prime.
Kickers: We love our TV shows and don't want to wait. I'm not that knowledgeable about it, but say Breaking Bad/Waling Dead airs Sunday. Are we able to watch it online Monday, every single time? Also, for shows like New Girl, Big Bang. Same thing? There are a few obscure shows she watches that we may miss because they aren't on the main channels, but I'm looking at saving money.
The only thing that would kill me is football season. I need football. I'm not sure if cable free would be good for me or not. For baseball, I could always do MLB.tv if I really wanted to(never use it as much as I wish I would).
I don't want to miss the new stuff.
Thoughts?

Don't you have to maintain an HBO subscription to use HBOgo?Pick6;1553026 wrote:I'm sorry

Know someone who will let you use their log in. Other than that, I think you have to have certain internet providers or some shit.like_that;1553075 wrote:Is there a way to watch on espn3 without having cable TV?

It doesn't look like it. Best they have is preseason live and game rewind.

I would still use comcast as my internet provider. You don't need to use their cable tv service to use espn3?wildcats20;1553078 wrote:

Getting rid of cable is for poor people.
Jk. Cable is ridiculous how much it costs for what it is.

hasbeen... big bang is normally available the next day on cbs.com as for New Girl normally for fox shows you have to wait 8 days but if you have hulu they are normally on there within a day or 2 I believe.
As for me I've thought about getting rid of cable but just can't do it manly because of sports. Also my internet provider doesn't have the watch ESPN yet... I'm sure it will here soon as it's a growing provider. One thing I do plan to get rid of when the promotional price is done is the HD/DVR as I rarely ever use it.

Also, if you have an iPad or iPhone, an Apple TV is a good buy, as you can stream your device to it. Roku only let's you stream content, not mirror displays.

I cancelled mine this week when TW didn't show up to fix my box. They called Sunday to confirm my Monday appt. I confirm. They call Monday to make sure I'm home and say they will be there in 30 minutes. An hour goes by so I call and they tell me the installers appt before mine went long and now he's off for the day now so I will have to reschedule. They offered me $20 for missing the appt. I laughed and cancelled. I'm moving to our new house Feb 1 so I will probably find someone besides time warner then.

Still have my cable, but I switched over to WOW from Time Warner this year and my bill went from 150 to 90.
TW is such a joke. I called them to tell them I was going to WOW but would stay with them if they would match the price for tv/phone/internet bundle. They weren't interested.
4 weeks after I cancelled I get the card in the mail to come back for the exact $90 I am paying with WOW and that I had asked them for. 4 people on my street switched over after hearing how much they could save from TW's raping and pillaging.
If you're going to send the stupid stay with us offer after the fact why did you tell me to buzz off when I tried to stay on? That kind of blew my mind a bit.

The only reason why we have cable is my wife is addicted the Five on Foxnews - otherwise we'd tank it. Apple TV works perfectly fine for everything else. We can handle not getting regular broadcasting on real time.
