About a week in, it's kind of cool. It's a nice change - a little less intense, more focus on less of the fundamentals, the excitement of a "new" move... You know... Like a half-nelson! But it's all good. It's a pretty good group of kids. About the only bad thing is trying to juggle my substitute teaching schedule with starting practice at 2:30pm.

Oh well. I hope to see everyone around - Inside The Circle style. (Look for something after the CD All-Star Meet. As well as something for the All-Star Meet!!!)

Nice. Enjoy your season. I had to give up my youth coaching gig because of work. I have no doubt I'll miss it.

I enjoyed my boys' times in Middle School. Fun age. You can see some top notch talent and also see tremendous growth of the newbies. Hard to not get excited when witnessing a first-time wrestler notch his very first win in competition. Cool stuff.

I just went down to the junior high level as well this year.

The challenge will be to teach head & arm defense WITHOUT simultaneously teaching them head & arm offense... I've got my hands full on that one.

The eternal conundrum.

What's a head and arm? I haven't mastered a double yet so I don't even bother with other stuff. Heck, I haven't mastered the double so I haven't even started sweating. I haven't started sweating so I don't bother cleaning the mats.

Consider me the Joker from the original Batman (my personal fave, btw)... "That sounds like a GREAT idea!!!"

Also, "Stop the press!" But that was stated by the goofy reporter, not the Joker.

All in all, I love it!

Congrats cruiser........ Good luck to you and your new team this year! What school??? Teach your wrestlers to stop & block the H & A also (I hate seeing anyone getting caught in that move) but it is very effective.

Lou: I guess it would be truer to say I dislike the shear reliance AT THE EXPENSE OF moves like a single, a double, a high-crotch, or snap down. I love a great Russian-tie series. One excellent technique from a Russian-tie???? The head-and-arm. Not overall hating on the move, but would like to see it used as an accent rather than the only serving.

HangLoose: Pickerington Lakevirw. Should be a great time.

A correctly executed headlock is worlds apart from a head'n arm. Just as Dominos is worlds away from stone fired pizza you would find in Italy. Yes, technically both are pizza, but at the same time they are not. Good luck in middle school.

hang loose: perhaps I can do you one better... www.lakeviewjhwrestling.webs.com - in the "Calendar" tab for one of our home meets (Jan. 8) is the school address. Also, I noticed I spelled "Lakeview" wrong in that last post... All thumbs, I say.

Lou -- I agree. Reminds me of when the movie Sideways came out. The main character was a wine snob who continually bagged on Merlot. After the movie, people felt a duty to bag on Merlot. I get the same feeling about statements about the head & arm. A few wrestling snobs bag on it and others feel a duty to. Sort of gotten cliche. Nothing wrong with the head & arm.

No quite the back pocket, but certainly in our back yard. I caught up with Coach Simpson at the Watkins Youth practice and he mentioned an upcoming camp and his small group training sessions. I asked for, and he sent me, a flier for both. Hopefully the kids will take advantage of the opportunity.
