Watching John Stossel, and a hypothetical was brought up, and it made me wonder.
Would you rather make $62,000/year, and be the highest paid employee at your business?
or
Would you rather make $64,000/year, and be the lowest paid employee at your business?
(Just answer the damn question, sleeper)

I'd say the benefit of being the highest paid employee at your business comes with a ton of power and freedom, so the 2 grand less is def worth it.

Lowest paid employee can probably get away without doing shit and has a job they dont even have to think for.

Lowest paid employee means you are in trouble if the company cuts down jobs.

Mostly, but I've also heard of situations where employees with higher salary have been let go to replace them with cheaper labor.SportsAndLady;1527576 wrote:Lowest paid employee means you are in trouble if the company cuts down jobs.

in my past experiences it's more job title than pay as they eliminate positions.

64 > 62. Everything else are intangibles I don't care about.

More money and more room to move up. I voted lowest.

I've done a similar thread on here but too lazy to find it. It has to do with people desiring superior wealth relative to their peers instead of being happy with just more money.
But to answer the question, I'd never want to be the highest paid employee at a company that can only offer $62,000/yr to that position. What are selling here, men's tampons?

Seriously, the lowest paid employee scenario not only makes more money but also has the upside of more room for growth.sleeper;1527591 wrote:I've done a similar thread on here but too lazy to find it. I think the lowest paid employee has limited growth opportunities, while the highest paid employee (assuming business owner) has exponential room for growth.I Wear Pants;1527608 wrote:Seriously, the lowest paid employee scenario not only makes more money but also has the upside of more room for growth.

The lowest paid employee is likely able to move up the ranks and get raises, etc. And when I think of employees I don't think of the owner.Pick6;1527612 wrote:I think the lowest paid employee has limited growth opportunities, while the highest paid employee (assuming business owner) has exponential room for growth.

That's a good point of clarity that's needed for the discussion. If that's how you interpret it, then I would tend to agree. BUT, I still believe you have opportunities if you are the highest paid employee. For example a partnership. I'll use public accounting just because that's what I have experience with. If you are a Senior Manager, which technically is the highest paid "employee", the next advancement usually is to contribute capital to the partnership and become and owner, while simultaneously at least increasing your income 3x.I Wear Pants;1527624 wrote:The lowest paid employee is likely able to move up the ranks and get raises, etc. And when I think of employees I don't think of the owner.
The more I think about it, the more I think it depends on the situation.
ETB- what are your thoughts?

My thoughts are, after reading through this thread, I'd change my decision, however, if people had to make the rash decision right away, I feel they would choose differently.Pick6;1527641 wrote:ETB- what are your thoughts?

This is how I feel. Nowhere to go but up if you are lowest paid.I Wear Pants;1527624 wrote:The lowest paid employee is likely able to move up the ranks and get raises, etc. And when I think of employees I don't think of the owner.

The highest paid person in the company is 64. You're at 62 and the lowest. Meaning their range is 2 grand. Meaning, can you really expect to make 100 grand soon, when they only pay the highest paid person 64?
