I think the one thing that really is working in their favor is simply that beyond a few teams, there is just so much parity among the good-to-really-good teams that a few consecutive wins will help them out greatly, while the occasional loss here and there won't be as costly. Seems like most everyone is in that "two steps forward, one (or two) steps back" mode, which means that as long as they're making more steps forward than back (like they have the past couple weeks), they'll move up.
Now, without a huge streak, "up" might max at a 6 seed or so, but getting a huge streak that includes a win over Wisconsin (either the regular season game or a meeting in the B1G tournament AND a good conference tourney run (making, if not winning the finals) could boost them to a 3-4 seed.
Definition of "huge streak": making tournament finals and losing no more than 2 games (preferably no more than 1) the rest of the way with no bad losses (ie: win all home games with possible exception of Wisconsin and DEFINITELY don't get tripped up at Penn State or depleted Michigan).
