edit: I watched a pretty interesting show on the history channel this morning that questioned whether he was even Italian. The premise was that he was Catalonian (spanish) but committed piracy against the crown earlier in his life so he came up with his Genoese background to distance himself from those transgressions. I believe the show was made a few years ago so not sure if this has been refuted or not
