The U.S. Department of Defense has announced the suspension of all intercollegiate athletic competitions at all service academies. Due to the shutdown, certain sports information departments may be closed for media availability.

[INDENT] Air Force says travel for all intercollegiate athletics cancelled as result of gov't shutdown, including football game at Navy on Saturday.

That should free up NBC's Saturday afternoon football lineup for about half the season.

Navy athletics and Air Force athletics are funded very differently. Air Force relies upon government funds for their programs. That's the rub for Saturday's game. Private funds have already been pledged to cover the travel costs for the Falcons to come to Annapolis this weekend. The legality of such an effort is being investigated as we post. A final decision will be made by Thursday.

Are the private funds covering all the Falcon athletes traveling or just the football team?

edit - found this.

The next scheduled event for Air Force is a volleyball match Thursday at Boise State. There are a number of events Friday, including a women's soccer match at Utah State, cross country at Notre Dame invite and golf and tennis events.

Lots of athletes are being effected.

....
What I have heard is that funds have been pledged to cover the expenses for Saturday's football game...basically the costs to enable Air Force to play. It's a combination of both Navy and Air Force private donors.

Navy athletics unlike Air Force and the USMA are not operated from federally appropriated dollars.

Navy-Air Force Football Game Is ON No word on the other 24 athletic events scheduled to take place from Thursday-Sunday

Oct. 3, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md.--The United States Naval Academy and United States Air Force Academy have received approval from the Department of Defense to play on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11:40 AM and the game will be televised by CBS. Saturday's game is sold out and a record crowd is expected.
There has been no indication if the other 24 athletic events scheduled from Thursday-Sunday will take place. Navy enters Saturday's contest with a 2-1 record, while Air Force is 1-4. The winner of the last 13 Navy-Air Force games has gone on to win the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy. Three of the last four Navy-Air Force games has gone to overtime

Side note. I'm a Reds fan, but I was pulling for a Pirates/Indians WS after the Reds loss. Tough (for me) to root against anyone in that series, since it'd be an incredible story either way.

We hate cancellations, so we’re offering to fly <s>@</s>AF_Academy to this year’s Air Force-Navy game. Retweet if you agree. http://es.pn/15LuaYq

It's not like United just decided to offer their services. Lol

They had some "gentle encouragement" to do so by some very influential people.

Good for them, however, for making it sound like they are saving the day for the Academies playing.
