"can't help but feel like the immense amount of gifts exchanged on Christmas are often a means of self-medication for the empty life of the typical American"

What a douche.

This dude says this, but I guarantee you he loved opening the presents he got today..

More than likely he is the one with the empty life, and therefore the reason he feels the need to post such shit.

maybe he has a point. maybe people should be acting like this all year round instead of only doing it for one day.

Sounds a little self deprecating if you ask me. I think he's the one who views the gift giving as self-medication. And honestly, what's wrong with that? It's not like life is perfect. We all need moments of rest, release, escape, and relaxation. Whether the self-medication comes more from the giving than the getting I really fail to see why that's a problem.

Hmm, maybe get your own job, work hard in life, don't eat junk food, and bang hot women every day and you wouldn't need to be giving or selfless any time of the year.

Problem solved.

Way to avoid my question entirely. You made a statement with certainty and provided no reasoning other than they should do it. I'm asking why you feel that is a good thing.

As for why not, I think people can take care of themselves and don't need to give worthless slobs anything other than the finger, and you can take that to the bank.

i wasnt avoiding your question, i wasnt going to answer a stupid response like "why". it was obvious you didnt agree, so atleast when you say "why", tell me why i am wrong for thinking people should.

so everyone who has hit hard times is a slob? mistfortune never happens to good people? what about normal people like your friends, family etc? you never did anything to help your parents out or your friends when they needed anything? and you have never accepted gifts or help from anyone ever? whats the point of going through life if you only look out for yourself? plus one day, the shit might hit the fan for you and you might hit hard times, wouldnt it be nice to know someone might help you out in some way, or are you perfect?

and i am sure this guy is just a slob right?
