It wasn't a boat getting hit by a huge wave. The boat rose up and crested, and plunged back into the water.

Hope this helps.

True. And it was funny to read the comments from all the crusty old sailors "that's not a wave..."

A wave is a disturbance on the surface of a body of water in the form of a moving ridge or swell .

The ship can't crest if it doesn't hit a wave. There wouldn't be anything for it to crest upon.

My buddy was a navy chief attached to a destroyer and he was out at sea a lot his 24 years. Showed him this video and he said he never saw anything like that. Said it was crazy to see how hard that wave hit.

What do you suggest the ship would be cresting on?

I wonder how long they had to cruise in those seas.

The ship crested after it hit a wave. The boats landing was massive.
A massive wave did not hit the boat.

Agreed. Where we disagree is the size of the wave it crested on. It was "massive". The size of the wave contributed to the "massive" landing.

It was large enough to cause the angle of the ship when coming down on the backside of the wave to displace a large amount of water which slammed against the window which the recorder was behind.

Not even a disagreement, I'm just being my normal prick self. :p When ya talk about a wave hitting a ship, I'm thinking port or starboard.

It wasn't the fall that killed him, it was the landing.

Didn't look like a massive wave. A big part of the splash (honestly seen worse on Deadliest Catch) depends on the wave frequency. On the Great Lakes, for example, more shipwrecks are caused and it's not because of bigger waves but because of a shorter frequency.

When I think "massive" wave, I think freak rogue waves over 50 foot.

No doubt that "massive" can be used subjectively in trying to describe something. Often times its compared to that which is usually realized as opposed to others that damage.
