I have a friend and his parents own a farm, good size I think.
He was telling me that his parents can’t grow Sweet Corn in one of the fields because an EPA (I think) inspected the field and found deer shit. Because the sweet corn is for human consummation they ban the field for two years from growing sweet corn. Is this even possible?

He also mentions that his parents can’t use the seeds from their crops they have to purchase seeds from a seed producer like Monsanto … is this also true?

I saw this article where Monsanto sued a farm because his field was across from Monsanto hybrid testing corn crop.

Monsanto (pure evil) has patented seeds that they do not allow farmers to save and regrow. They force farmers to re-buy seeds every year. I think something like 80% of the corn grown in the US is from Monsanto seeds. They've sued and ruined the lives of so many farmers, it's despicable. Sounds like a problem with the government. The company sounds quite wise with their actions.

I wouldn't use the word wise, but I agree that a big portion of the problem lies with the government.

That's typically a myth. The real stories out there are that the seeds were blowing from Roundup fields to non-roundup fields, the farmer(s) (there is only 1 recorded case for blowing seeds, and it was in Canada) knew that what had happened as the corn was obviously different. He then cleaned and reused the seeds the following year to plant large amounts of Roundup corn and was promptly sued.

As for "in bed with the Government" same thing goes for farmers. How many billions are spent on farmers who get bailed out every time we have a short drought?

Really So there is some truth to this idea of banning crops, controlling seeding and sueing farmer for cross pollenating with test crops. WOW

Mrs. FFT owns some farms through a family partnership but they don't actively farm. But we're semi-involved in various management decisions.

My understanding of the seed issue is that it's done to prevent certain genetic mutations that would make insects and diseases resistant. Most farms are required to set aside portions that the bugs gravitate to so as to slow mutations. If people cheat and reuse the seeds, it increases systemic risks through free-rider type issues. So as I understand it, the rules make sense.

And yes, the farm subsidies are stupid and disproportionately benefit rich white people, like my in-laws.
