Got a buddy to come out with his backhoe and dig me a hole. Hes an Irish Setter and probably goes 70lbs if not a little bigger. I had to carry him out to the hole to put him down. Probably one of the hardest things I have done in awhile. Hes been with us for 13 years and for some reason this has been the roughest one so far to put down for me. Not sure if its my age or what but it never bugged me this much.

You're a better man than I, mcburg. I'm sure you had to, but I don't think I could do it myself.

Im fine just never felt like this before when I had to put down a family pet. Next time the vet is doing it and I am not going to be in the room with them.

I was raised to take care of your own animals whether it be a dog, cat, or anything else. I have always just finished them when it was time. This time though was the last time I will ever do that. It really hit me hard when I carried him to the hole and he was looking at me. It tore me up inside and I have felt sick ever since.Raw Dawgin' it;1446647 wrote:You shot your dog? Damn.

There is not much worse than seeing your favorite pet dead.
My dog Lucky died of cancer a few years ago, completely unexpectedly. I found her frozen on the porch of my house one December morning after she had crawled there in the middle of the night, trying to find me, once the uncontrolled army of abnormal cells had finally overtaken her central nervous system. She was the last dog I will ever have.

Losing a pet sucks, but I don't think I could leave behind a loved pet with a complete stranger. Envisioning my pet looking back at me as I left the room would slam the door on that possibility.mcburg93;1446644 wrote:Next time the vet is doing it and I am not going to be in the room with them.

It's just a cat.

If your vet is a complete stranger, you're not doing it right.

A cat is just as lovable as any other pet. I would expect an answer like that from you, since you adopt animals and then return them if they don't behave a certain way immediately.ernest_t_bass;1446839 wrote:It's just a cat.
I was referring to the animal. Leaving it with a stranger the pet likely doesn't know.wildcats20;1446845 wrote:If your vet is a complete stranger, you're not doing it right.

Sorry to hear about this Mcberg. Mine is 15 and when it's time for that to occur the Vet will be the one doing the deed. I couldn't do it.

mcburg93, It took a lot of love for your dog to do what you did. I know I couldn't have done it. Be thankful your dog is not suffering anymore. Thats no way to live. Don't beat yourself up to much on this..........It was hard but you did the right thing.

having been in your shoes next time i am going to try and find something more humane than shooting because it does suck and just doesnt feel humane. but i will do it myself when the time comes. prolly some type of drug injection.

We asked our vet his thoughts, and he said shooting our Labs was fine. He gave us some meds so that they would basically be asleep. That said, I certainly could not do it and neither could anyone else in the family, so our neighbor ended up being the one to do it.Gblock;1447091 wrote:having been in your shoes next time i am going to try and find something more humane than shooting because it does suck and just doesnt feel humane. but i will do it myself when the time comes. prolly some type of drug injection.

If it's asleep, why not just bag it's head and bury it? That doesn't seem as bad to me as watching my dogs brains get splattered.Fab4Runner;1447113 wrote:We asked our vet his thoughts, and he said shooting our Labs was fine.
