Ugh....not an animal person. I don't mind dogs but I never ever had any desire for one. I ok'd my family getting a small cuddly worthless dog but my family brought back a beagle/corgi mix and it is 5 months old and has been in a kennel all 5 months....never getting out with other dogs or really getting out at all. We got it home after it shit in the car and gave it water in the back yard....it pretty much peed every 2-3 minutes outside. We want it to be an inside dog and a low maintenance/calm dog.

Any recommendations for training outside or sleeping in a cage inside?

Thanks.....it's stressing me out pretty good and I have minimal patience.

Dogs will pee every 2-3 minutes in a foreign (outdoor) place, especially after being cooped up. Just marking his territory.

There will be a "learning" period.

Just chill out.

I'm trying to. Will it continually mark it's territory in the house (also foreign)?

Does rubbing it's nose in it's pee help or am I making that up?

No. Rubbing your own nose in his pee will be equally effective.

For the dog's sake, and yours as well, you need more than bits and pieces of advice from a bulletin board. You need to search out thorough information online or in books on how to train your dog and yourself - having a well mannered dog requires both.
Find an obedience school where you live and enroll in a class. You can glean a lot of info from the instructors and others class members.

If you are unable or unwilling to deal with dog ownership properly you'd be best to return it to where you got it(unless it came from a puppy mill -then get it to a no kill shelter).

Thanks for all the advice....I read up on it. It's a very stressful time in our lives right now and I just want to keep this transition as smooth as possible.

The dog isn't just urinating, it is marking. What you or your wife needs to do is take 2-3 days and take the dog out for regular walks and praise him when he goes to the bathroom outside. Monitor him when he is indoors and if it looks like he's going to pee try to get him outside. Crate training works to some degree, but dogs are pack animals and their only goal in life is to be around you 24/7 if they deem you to be the pack leader. Just be patient for a few days and the dog will figure it out.

Patience, patience, patience. It's not going to happen overnight. As MB said, praise him when he does good, give him a small treat or something. You don't even have to smack him when he does bad. A stirn "no, bad dog", is equally as effective.

Also, when he's been bad, don't just put him in the cage. The dog will then associate the cage as being a "bad place", and you don't want that. You need the dog to feel comfortable in his cage.

Once you know the dog well enough, you will be able to pick up on his little habits. Those habits will give away what the dog wants.

As for the cage, again, patience. The dog will eventually get used to being in and sleeping in the cage. It will take some sufferable moments on your part with the dog howling, whining, and barking to be let out. The worst thing you can do is let him out then.

All you are doing then is reenforcing to the dog, that to get out, he just has to make noise. Then it will get worse. Just ignore it and let him make all the noise he wants. Eventually he will learn making noise doesn't help and will stop.

We used clicker training. Basically click and give the dog a treat. Once he learns clicks are good every time he does something good like peeing outside click treat. The clicking should be done immeaditly after the action so he know why he is being rewarded. We also used bells on the door. Basically every time he goes outside we ring the bells that way when it's time to go out he just walks up to the door and rings the bells.

I volunteered at an animal shelter and taught obedience classes. I can't recommend them enough, esp if you and your family continue the training at home. Will make your life and enjoyment of a pet easier.

Ironman92, puppies are like that. They can only hold it for not very long. After he or she (?) eats, take it out in an hour. You'll figure out the time period real soon. I had a hard time trying to house-break a rescued beagle but I did it. Don't over feed or over water and try to keep your pup on a regular schedule. I know that is hard to do but "pup" will learn and it will make your life a little easier:thumbup:.
