That is hideous. But to answer your question, yes it is a fad. It's called ombre, and it's typically a little more subtle. It can look good on the right person with the right colors.
Personally, I can get this look for free when I let my white trash roots grow out after having it dyed. It has been known to happen.

It can look really great if a professional stylist does it....but if it's a home job or done by someone without proper training it will be a train wreck.

My wife has it and it looks great. She actually gets compliments on her hair, by strangers, quite frequently.

Girls just shouldn't dye their hair without a man signing a release form. It's clear some women don't have a clue. (prob the same can go for guys).
