I'm in somewhat of a weird situation.

I lost my wallet last week for the first time ever....fucking sucks.

I have an Ohio's drivers license, but I can't replace unless I'm at an Ohio DMV, in person. I won't be able to do this until June. In the meantime I would like to get a NY, non-drivers ID. I don't like carrying my passport around, it's a pain and if I lose this I'm in an even worse situation.

In my limited research I've found out that if you apply for an NY, non-drivers ID, it automatically revokes your NYC drivers license (if you hold one). My question is this..

If I just get the NY non-drivers ID card, will this have any effect on my valid Ohio drivers license (it asks for previous license# and state on the form)?

I don't drive here and I plan to change addresses in the next few months, so no real point to go through the process of getting an NY license. It costs more and I believe I would have to take a written test again...not 100% sure on that. The next time I'm in Ohio all I do is show up at the DMV, show forms of ID, SS card, pay $25, get OH drivers license.


Tomorrow I aim to go to the DMV at 8am to sort this. Should be a fucking joy. :mad:

DMV is the worst. I waited in line for over 4 hours in DC for my new license last year. Only good news from that is in DC its good for 8 years which seems crazy. Even though I've moved I will not get it replaced until its expired.

You might be able to get a replacement Ohio license through the mail (although it would take awhile, I imagine). From quick googling it says to call the Ohio Driver's License Division at (614) 752-7600 and they might be able to help.

Im pretty sure Ohio has the same law if you get an Ohio id your license are revoked/void what ever they do with them. The best thing I have found to do is report your wallet stolen it seems to make everything easier to replace. I know you can use the police report to get a new license. Not sure if being out of state if this will work or not.

I've called my local DMV near my parents, they said I must be in person.

Just tried that number a few times....busy.

I don't see why getting a regular ID card, would effect my Ohio driver's license, but if it will revoke it...I'm probably just gonna wait it out. I went by the nearest DMV en route to work today, it was a fucking zoo at 9am. Tomorrow I'm gonna hit it up before the doors open.

Arizona drivers licenses don't expire until your 65th birthday. The first time I looked at my brothers and saw his expiration date of 2045 I was like WTF?

I also think you can order a replacement online in AZ, unless my friend is full of shit.

NY and Ohio are a bitch.

This helped, thanks. Called the number, getting a NY issued non-drivers license will revoke my current OH driver's license. So it looks like I'll be using the passport until I can get to Ohio. At least it saved me the nightmare of going to the DMV tomorrow.

You don't get to keep 2 ID cards (why you'd surrender a NY license to get the ID). So I would guess technically you'd have to surrender your OH license to get a NY ID, which means it's null (but obviously you can't surrender what you do not have).

I was speaking in regards to Ohio Driver's License Division. They care, hence why my OH license would be voided.

Just switch your license to a NY license. When I bought my car I still had my Ohio license and I had to get a pa license. All I did is go down to penndot and they looked up my license switch it to pa took my picture and that was it.

You mean you didn't have to show 20 forms of ID and your first born in order to do it?

Assuming he has an address there he can do this. Don't know if the money is worth it for a few months though (he'll get double-banged going back to OH whereas a replacement license is probably much cheaper).

I think it's actually federal law that prevents you from having 2 ID's. Even if you have dual-residence, you have to pick 1 state for your D/L.

LOL, there's that too. It's no small task to get a d/l in a state you've not recently had one.

Nope all I had to do is show my social. But I also had my license on me and handed it in that's probably why it was so easy

Find a Mexican they can hook you up with any type of ID .. hope this helps :D

Must vary by state, which is somewhat surprising. An existing ID [for a different state] is almost worthless, at least in some states, possibly because of frauds and forgeries being used to obtain a valid state ID. I think it is accepted as a photo ID, but it means squat for proof of residence and citizenship.

It's not worth it. It's $90 for an NY drivers license. I don't drive here, and my address isn't permanent. I also think I'd have to take a written test again. Like you said...not worth it. I'll just wait til I'm in Ohio, pay the $25 and be done with it.
