Apparently since Mike Malone has left being an assistant with the Cavs he's become a hot name as a future head coach. I could see Mike Brown being his "defensive coordinator" if he gets a head coaching gig whether it's with the Cavs or elsewhere. Hell let's just get Kuester as the offensive assistant and bring the whole group back together haha...

Okay wasn't calling you out just curious if you thought GRjr was a better prospect than Otto. Don't agree, but respect the opinion.

Porter is definitely the safer prospect, but I see him being a Jeff Green type guy. Solid player, decent 3rd option, good intangibles, but a limited ceiling.

Within an ESPN insider section discussing Mike Brown this list of candidates was at the bottom of the article.

"Other candidates for the job include Golden State assistant coach Mike Malone, Indiana assistant coach Brian Shaw, former Portland head coach Nate McMillan, former Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy, Jeff Van Gundy and former head coach Flip Saunders."

If I had to rank them:

1. Stan Van Gundy
2. Brian Shaw
3. Nate McMillian
4. Mike Malone (could rank higher with Brown as top defensive assistant, I'd be OK with that)

Jeff Van Gundy and Flip Saunders can stay as analysts. Don't want them close to the Cavs.

Let me start by saying I think it's HIGHLY unlikely, especially with the current roster. But, do you think if this was something he'd consider doing, that he'd be in contact with Lebron to judge his interest in returning? If he were to take this job this off season, it would lead me to believe that there's a good chance Lebron comes back. It would be awesome if it would, but I just don't see this happening though.

lol, I was wondering how long it would take for this type of response. I don't think Phil and Lebron have had that type of history in order for Phil to convince him to come back.

Just stop with all the LBJ coming back nonsense. This is turning into the decision all over again. the only way we'll really know is if he chokes and quits in the playoffs next season.

I was going to come up with a longer post but this sums it up. If Lebron comes back, who is coaching won't be anywhere near a dispositive factor.


One of my friends made a great (albeit it longish) argument for Mike Brown. If anyone wants me to post it I will but I'm not going to waste your time otherwise.

Cliffnotes version? I have no desire to see him back here. Obviously would be different players this time around, but never felt like he had control of that team.

I don't feel like summarizing it so I'll copy and paste. Apologies

That Mike Brown has the best track record, can improve the defense and make this team a winner in the short-term...I think it's fair to say that this team will DEFINITELY be better next year with Brown. You can't say that for any other realistic candidate.

2. But what about the long-term, as Grant has eluded to being so important in his decision making? Next year will be the 3rd year of the Kryie Irving era. He is a star. Probably the 2nd best PG in the league next year behind CP3. He hasn't been able to get this team over the top in his first two years alone, but then again, neither could LeBron. Mike Brown came to Cleveland in year 3 of LeBron, and took a young, terrible defensive team to the playoffs, which he built upon every year until he turned the team into a perennial 60-win squad with a roster that was changed from terrible to mediocre with 0 young talent and no playmaking ability outside LeBron. He turned a lineup of Snow, Pavlovic, a young Andy, Donyell Marshall, Damon Jones and Z into a NBA Finals team. The young assets we gave him were Luke Jackson, Shannon Brown, Sasha and JJ Hickson. Eww. Boobie has actually REGRESSED since Brown left. With a nice, young and talented core and a ton of cap room and draft picks galore, not to mention a new GM, don't you think we could give him the tools he needs to be even better?

3. I know he had a bad track record of not making in-game adjustments..but I think that gets thrown around a lot without a lot of context. Lets be real here, guys. Were you not confident we were beating the Celtics until LBJ decided to put Tank-a-Palooza into effect? You can say what you want about the Orlando series, he didn't make adjustments, but I'm not so confident we win that series even if he did. That was a straight up matchup nightmare with Turk, Lewis and Howard. That team was on fire, momentum and confidence swung their way, and we got beat. A lot of good/great coaches have lost in the conference Finals. Brown was 1-1, and probably would have gotten revenge had he been given a fair chance at moving past Boston and playing Orlando again. Just my opinion on that.

4. More on that, we're clamoring for a guy like Stan Van Gundy, who has a nearly identical track record as Brown, except not as good. He failed in Miami with Wade and Shaq, learned from his mistakes and took Orlando to the Finals (once) and then couldn't get back, got fired and rubbed everyone the wrong way. Why is he a better option than Brown, who at least developed a strong enough rapport with a team to be there for 6+ years and have everyone speak highly of him. Shaq calls SVG "the master or panic." SIGN ME UP!!!

5. There's no point in speculating what implications this would have about LBJ coming back. LBJ leaving had nothing to do with Mike Brown being the coach, if it did, he would have worked with us to find somebody he liked when we fired Brown. Bron has had nothing but praise for Mike Brown since, and I'm starting to think their relationship issues were overblown. to what degree, I don't think it really matters. If LeBron wants to come back, he will come back. It won't have anything to do with the coach.

6. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, at the current state of the team, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to Mike Brown. We know what we're getting: a top-notch defensive coach, a guy who can develop talent, and a guy who has a proven track record of taking young teams and turning them into contenders. And this time, it's set up for him to do even better (minus not having LeBron, but still). Maybe Brown has learned from his failures? After all, Doc Rivers, Larry Brown and Rick Carlisle (3 of the 13 coaches in the last 30+ years to even win a title) didn't succeed in their first (or 2nd, sometimes 3rd jobs). Would you rather take a chance on an Assistant with no HC experience? Going into this kind of season where we HAVE to improve? If you do, I'd love to hear why, but hot assistants turn out to be Keith Smart more often than Frank Vogel. If Shaw is so coveted, why did the Lakers pass on him when he was thought to be Phil's successor? Why was his only HC offer since the Bobcats?

Ill start off by saying there is no way in hell Phil will come here. Anybody who thinks there is a possibility is delusional and/or misinformed. Phil wanted crazy demands, as well as crazy money to come back to coach Kobe, Pau, Dwight, and Nash. He would probably request that he can coach the games on Skype lol.

Ill read the Mike Brown argument later when I have some time.

I would be OK with Mike Dunlap for an assistant on Brown's staff. He had a good run and gun style about him, just tried to execute it with the worst team in the league. Or go back to John Kuester who's also unemployed at the moment. I'm cool with either one.
