How is this NOT alarming? At least the ACLU, a VERY liberal group is the one who unearthed this...there is no way anyone on either side of the isle can be "ok" with this right?

Does anyone honestly think that every single email sent is not read by at least one government agency? I've got an idea, someone send an email saying something about the President and see how long it takes for the SS to show up at your door. The idea that we have ANY privacy is stupid. I'm not sure I'm all-in on that, but I think the computer in "Person of Interest" could be real, sans the predictive ability. By that I mean I do think an army of computers is scanning all communications for key words. Although I'd be surprised if they really have the resources to get all cellular, even landline, comm.

You do know that the NSA is building a data center in Utah that is going to be used for that very purpose? Every single electronic signal sent is going to be intercepted and analyzed and stored. We have no privacy. It may be illegal under federal law for any agency to spy on Americans citizens, but have no doubt that it happens and every single day. The government doesn't give a damn about the law.

You mean the whopping $2B they're spending on that thing? Given the massive inefficiency of our gubmit, that might be enough to catalog all the communications of one small city.

Every single communication over the internet in this country is monitored, they have taps on all the switching stations. It's very real, there is no privacy. You say anything that is on a watch list over the internet, and you are going to get a visit from federal agencies. The constitution is meaningless.

If they monitor everything, imagine how much time/money is wasted reading the txts of teenage girls.

They don't physically monitor everything with a human. They have computers looking for key words that would flag someone to actually read it and assess the threat level (that's roughly how the NSA screening works for emails, internet messages, texts, phone calls, etc).

I'm ok with that, but if the IRS wants to audit me they should have to get a warrant to look through my phone/emails.

I think the surprise for me was that it's saying the IRS can do this. I've believed the CIA/FBA/NSA/DOD/DHS were doing it already, so that's not a surprise. The IRS, though?

They're spending a bunch of money on the building and maintenance of an infrastructure to make sure they're not missing any money collected in taxes ... does that sound about right?

The thing with that is, that's not something you're going to be able to defend under the already-abused claim of "national security." The IRS isn't involved in providing for the common defense except in finding new ways to squeeze the public in order to pay for all of this "defense."

I guess I'm not surprised, but it's still upsetting.
