Heading to NYC next week. Have tickets to the Big East Championship. Any good bars/restaurants around MSG that anybody would recommend? Other nightlife suggestions? Not seeing any sights. Drinking and watching basketball.

There's a bar right across the street, forget the name but it will be completely packed. I would take the blue line local up to 50th street (two stops, at most a 7 minute trip) where there are plenty of pubs/vodka rooms/restaurants in Hell's Kitchen/Midtown West. During the BE tournament the subway is definitely the way to go.

As opposed to driving or taxis? We were just going to the get the weekly subway pass and call it a day. I'm not messing around with a vehicle down there.

Yeah as opposed to taxis. I made the mistake of trying to take one down to the Village during the tournament and got stuck for an hour. 8th and 9th will be jammed.

Rudy's Bar & Grill. 44th & 9th

It's a dive, but one of my favorites in the area and cheap. It's a good place if you're just looking to get smashed and not kill your wallet. Also, free hot dogs.

Went to Rudy's 4 times last May with my "underemployed" lawyer friend still in NYC. Rudy's is the only bar he can afford. I think he lives off their hot dogs.

I think I found my next vacation destination!

All of the female bartenders are 55+ also.

TBone, as far as nightlife, I'd get away from MSG and midtown. Hit up any of the villages.

I'd probably stay home and not go to NYC.

Hope this helps

I will definitly hit up Rudy's. Sounds like a classic NY treasure.

Also heard that this was decent low key spot: http://www.tempestbarnyc.com/

Any specifically? The only ones I know offhand are Greenwich and East.

Smuggle in as many 2-liters as possible. Can probably make a small fortune off those things if you find a house hosting a birthday party!

I've been to Tempest. It ok, your typical Midtown bar/pub. I don't believe its as overpriced as other similar places.

West, East and Greenwich village...can't go wrong with either really. You'll be able to find anything you want in regards to bars, live music, food etc. Just look Yelp and check reviews.
