Got home earlier today from a weekend in Chicago with the wife. Got to enjoy the best musical/play (Book of Mormon) and steak (Gibsons) ever!

If you ever get the chance to see Book of Mormon, do it! Even if you aren't into musicals you will enjoy it. Written by South Park founders Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

I can't describe the Gibson's steak and give it justice....just eat there when you are in town.

Book of Mormon is supposed to be coming to Cincinnati at the Aronoff center some time this year. I definitely want to catch it.

I"m seeing BoM next month..pretty pumped

Gibson's is just too good. I work right down the street.

On a side note, I just spent the last hour standing outside watching a house on fire. Literally 8 houses down..just completely engulfed in flames. Crazy

The wife and i will be going to Chicago next mo. We have tickets for BM and some other plans that the daughter is arranging.
I enjoy Chicago Theater better than NY, Chicago is a great city but you do have to be careful more now than a few years ago.

Chicago gets a lot of bad hype, but it's Top 3 in greatest cities in the US.

I agree with the great city but until Chicago start to handle the increase in potential violence and the roving gangs during special events, late and early morning subway problems Chicago will lose its attraction of a fun, safe and enjoyable town. </SPAN>
We have been going to Chicago for the past five years and have seen the problem spreading into some of the other neighborhood like Lakeview and Lincoln Park. The Subway Red line is the worse for crime, not getting better but I see the Blue line is getting a more sleazy also. </SPAN>

I don't go anywhere in Chicago without my two Kershaw blades. I hurt my knee a few weeks ago ( slow to heal) and will be purchasing a Cane Sword soon which will be a handy weapon in Chicago.

My daughter can't wait for Chicago to become a CCW City it will be coming ...

I know it varies by person and experience, but I've lived here for about 3 years and never had any issues nor found myself in an unsafe situation. Just been smart about where I go (i.e., don't go to Englewood or really most neighborhoods south of the South Loop, or Cicero), and paid attention to my surroundings.

If you stick to River North/Old Town/Lincoln Park/Lakeview/Ravenswood/North Center/Lincoln Square/Andersonville/Roscoe Village and some sections of Wicker Park/Bucktown/West Loop, chances are you'll be safe as long as you don't invite trouble and pay attention if you're in a crowded area. And if it seems like a shady area, it probably is.

How much was BoM? When it came here shitty seats were going for $250 each. Needless to say, I didn't go.

Haha..good call. Pequod's is really fucking good. It's the only place that I would order deep dish from, and I do once a month.

The Red Line stop at Chicago & State has had the highest rate of crime over any other stop on the entire CTA rail line over the past few years. That stop is smack dab in the middle of Gold Coast. 3/4 blocks south of ritzy stores like Hermes, Neiman's, etc.,. More (reported) crime than any stop on the south and west sides. It's crazy to think about. But I do agree with you. Pay attention to your surroundings, try not to act like a lost tourist lol, and you'll be fine.

And the day Illinois becomes CCW, will be the day I move to the burbs. I'm all for CCW...but it is not needed in this city. It would make it worse, IMO.

Anywho...off my soapbox. Glad you had a good time in the city slingbox. Haven't made the trip to Gibson's yet, but I have eaten at Tavern on Rush just down the street. Delicious steak, reasonable prices too. Great for people watching in the summertime.

Makes sense though..thugs will look for rich people, not other thugs/poor people. That stop also had a pretty bad string of incidents I think 2 summers ago. Probably jacked that number up.

Luckily I get off a stop before that one..Clark & Division. Not much crime, just lots of piss

I'm not sure about the chicago and state stop being the worst unless that's the same as the Roosevelt stop that also serves the green and orange line. I have a friend who works in the Chicago PD and he always said that was the worst by far besides orher loop stops. He also said the red line always had a lot of the top ten crime spots but that was because its 24/7.

Gotta go to Morton's in the Windy City. With that being said it has gotten a lot worse in the last ten years. Detroit is bad but it's not as violent as that town

Criminals usually stay close to home, which is why crime is so bad in ghettos.

Other places they gravitate toward tourist centers and it's mostly petty stuff like purse snatches, pick pockets and the occasional mugging.

Let's put this in perspective though: The Tribune analyzed data from 2009 - May 2012 (so 3+ years) and found 109 crimes at the Chicago Red stop. Actually 6th worst in their survey. Being a 24-hr line, that doesn't sound too bad really.

I would guess mostly easy targets - we're not talking about ideal conditions to commit a crime here. But obviously maybe some common sense, like don't take public transit after your shopping trip (get a cab) and don't get onto El cars with no one else in them.

I stay away from chains when I can. I've had Morton's up near Somerset.
