It's hardly new, but still a deplorable practice...."cut my budget, I'll SHOW YOU!!!"

Too bad we didn't elect the guy that campaigned on Hope & Change in 2008.

God, I hate these people (and that's a non-partisan phrase). People seriously think that more of these clowns is really the answer to the country's problems? They ARE the damn problem.

Cut the salaries of some of the DHS and you'd cover the budget gap. These people are gross.

The problem continues to lie in average Americans overspending and trying to live the life a life of luxury without earning it. Latest and greatest cell phones, designer clothes, new cars, new furniture, eating out all the time, etc. These have become needs not wants and that's why people say they are struggling. Cut the shit and save money for tough times instead of relying on uncle sam and the wealthy to bail you out.

Big gubmit behaves just like unions (perhaps unsurprisingly). They'll do everything to protect their jobs.

Cut staff 20%....Cut pay 20%....Increase workloads 20% - you know, like what's happened in the private sector - and problem solved (for starters).

When budgets are too fat, inefficiency breeds inefficiency. People get lazy, and because they see how expendable they are they also become very protective (which also involves becoming MORE inefficient to create the appearance of being necessary).

Really sickening. I'm also guessing you have mini-fiefdoms, or "empire building" in the business world, where pay & power are based on the size of your budget and how many staffers you have. Every one of those people will predictably fight tooth and nail for every last penny.

DHS is a completely worthless department. Get rid of the entire department and save $60b a year.

There's a lot to be said about that. Few surveys floating around that the majority of Americans favor budget cuts and see a need for them. But when you ask them what programs to cut (i.e. programs that might adversely impact them), there is no majority to cut a single program (maybe one). Classic case of spending other people's money and cutting other people's benefits, but not mine and don't ask me to pay.

Sadly, just look over at France, Italy, Greece, etc. - which are in worse shape than the US - and you see the dumb shits voting for more of the same. Truly hopeless. You just have to pray that the culture in the US isn't too far gone to reverse course.

I wish it was that easy. But, the cuts are across the board and hit every department in DHS. And, DHS has no say so over which programs it can move funds around to spare some other programs. So, they can cut salaries, but they still have to cut other things.

This is a worthless BS political move. I'm sure there was some rational behind it, but honestly, right now, it looks all political.

DHS is a mess, but it does have a function. It should be the chief coordinator of federal intelligence and management to state, local, and territories.
Which it is making sure the local police department gets the right intelligence for an attack, or coordinating all the federal and local agencies after an event, or coordinating and ensuring there is proper response after a natural disaster, that is what DHS should be.
It is far away from there right now.

It should never have been created. A totally unnecessary expansion of the federal government seeded during a time of national emotion and fear.

These national coordinating agencies sound great in the minds of the central planners but always evolve into something quite different and far more "controlling" than "coordinating".

With some of these great ideas you folks all have I'm surprised you aren't exploring a run for some office. Wouldn't it make sense to get in the game, even on the smallest local level, and make a real effort to enact some changes?

Oh I'd expect at least half the people are too stupid to elect us.
