Is it just me or does this kid not smell like trouble. Has his own brand?? What?
I know his fanily has money so I don't hold sitting Courtside at games against him because he very well could afford it. It just seems every week this kid is in the news and its always him flaunting himself in some way.

I won't defend it and it is somewhat comical since it is the SEC.
However, this type of thing is common. I have a friend going to school full-time for a degree in Biz Management. He's got 3 out of 4 classes online and it's not all that easy either. It's not an online or commuter school, it's a legit 4-year school.
I guess it's somewhat crappy that he's not actually "on campus", but I think there is a misconception that "online = easy." When I was in undergrad, yeah, most of them were pretty weak and poorly delivered. I think it's evolved a lot more now.
Those recently out of school or currently in school can correct me...

I havent taken any, but know some people who do and they dont complain. I mean arent all of your exams going to be open note? How can it be enforced?
Agree the more that I hear about Johnny "football", the more of a douche I think he is.

Proctored exams or assigning essays instead of multiple-choice type tests.Pick6;1394782 wrote:I havent taken any, but know some people who do and they dont complain. I mean arent all of your exams going to be open note? How can it be enforced

My buddy does have to go to campus twice a quarter for exams. At least for a few of the online classes. That's what I mean about above though. It's not formatted for the distance learners, but simply a way to cut down on brick and mortar and classroom space needed.

Essays can still be cheated on. Exams arent supposed to be open notes. I guess its possible he is being proctored, but proctoring that many students seems very inefficient in the sense that it is time consuming.Mulva;1394801 wrote:Proctored exams or assigning essays instead of multiple-choice type tests.

Whats going to happen during football season? Is he going to practice at a high school facility by himself? Does he not workout on campus in the offseason?
Everything is starting to scream "pretentious douche bag" to me.

Yup, this. Like he is too good for Texas a&m. He was probably catered by his rich ass parents his whole life

I'm not saying that's what he's doing, I'm saying that's what a lot of online courses do.Pick6;1394812 wrote:Essays can still be cheated on. Exams arent supposed to be open notes. The online microbiology class I took in undergrad had to meet for exams four times, all on Saturdays, during the semester. One of them was the morning after UK beat Ohio State in the tournament. That was the only class I ever got a C in.

I've had both. Some where we never met, but we had to go to the testing center for exams/tests.Midstate01;1395240 wrote:Im taking two online classes right now. And have taken 6total so far. None have ever met. All exams are online.

He's made tens of millions for the school but won't see a dime for his efforts. You begrudge him setting himself up for financial gain at a later date?Midstate01;1394578 wrote:http://m.espn.go.com/ncf/story?storyId=8977054

The whole "douchebag" thing I can see, a little bit. I do think we don't know enough about the guy to really say. Before the Heisman he was relatively unknown. It's not like his interviews and mug was plastered all over TV for years. I can see where someone on the outside could get that impression, but is there any substance to it?
Lets face it. Using the whole "online classes" thing is dumb if your goal is to berate him. It's common at every school. Students everywhere use it. If there are other reasons to hate on him, fine, but the way ESPN reported this as a "developing story" the other day is just dumb. If he wasn't a prominent football player nobody would give a shit.

10s of millions of dollars is an exaggeration if I've ever heard one. How about the school giving him a chance to make 10s of millions in the NFL?queencitybuckeye;1395278 wrote:He's made tens of millions for the school but won't see a dime for his efforts. I know of two SEC players taking full online courses this semester. Dont know of any other athlete doing this in D1. One is Manziel, and one is the star of Mizzou's bball team. Taking online courses isnt uncommon, taking at least 4 online classes at once is uncommon.Azubuike24;1395284 wrote:Lets not even go into this debate.

While I definitely agree with you on the second part of your post, there was one study of exposure done that said Manziel brought $37 million of exposure to A&M. Definitely not an exact science I wouldn't think but he did really help the program out.

Taking nothing but online classes and using the reasoning that it is too much of a distraction for him or other students if he were to be in traditiional classes is stupid. I'm sure Braxton Miller causes just as big of a distraction and Manziel would, or any other star player for that matter. Unless of course he was carrying his Heisman around from class to class, which wouldn't totally shock me at this point.

I mean, if that's how the schedule can be manipulated, why not? If the guy is enrolled in a pre-degree program and those classes are part of the curriculum, it makes sense doesn't it? As a football player, you're absolutely going to be required to be in a degree program. Basketball, not always the case considering the elite players aren't there more than a year or 2.Pick6;1395287 wrote:I know of two SEC players taking full online courses this semester. It sounds like you're basically questioning the validity of his degree or that he's getting preferential treatment. If it's the former, then we could argue for hours about how watered down many degree programs in even good schools are. If it's the latter, I'd take the stance that no single athlete is enough to change the curriculum of a degree program at a school. That stuff takes years and it's not like they would change it for a few semesters for one guy.
I will admit 2 things, and ironically, this is NOT the case with A&M actually. A lot of SEC schools are crappy academic institutions. Especially in the deep south, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State. It would not surprise me if there were curriculums designed to cater to this, in which you could take an athlete, enroll him in the easiest and most flexible degree program and get away with this.
My hunch? Manziel, like many other college kids, probably set this up unbeknown to others, to benefit himself. What college kid wouldn't want to have a semester where he can take all classes without having to attend a class and do everything from his iPad in the apartment?

Pretty interesting article. I'll admit I was surprised the value was that much, but it leaves me with questions. Everything was stated in "media value", not what the University actually pocketed of it. It was free advertisement, but the article specifically states "The figures do not reflect increases from merchandise sales, ticket requests or donations to the school". It is impossible to track how much additional revenue Manziel gained for the school.karen lotz;1395289 wrote:While I definitely agree with you on the second part of your post, there was one study of exposure done that said Manziel brought $37 million of exposure to A&M. Also calling BS on him having to pay 3k+ out of pocket every year. I've never heard of a D1, full-ride student athlete having to pay the school out of pocket.
