My computer will not charge or turn on. The Battery is dead, and the part of the computer that is faulty is the Power Source input, so new plugs won't help.

I have a ton of stuff I'd like to put on my new computer, but don't know how to transfer or what to do with the harddrive to access it.

I know this is very simple stuff to someone so please help.

1) What do I do with the harddrive on the faulty computer to put the songs (mostly) on the new computer?

2) The original computer is not broken, just cannot charge the battery from the current input source. Is there an alternative way around this so I can turn it on and maybe just put a flash drive on so I can swap the info? Or maybe even fix it entirely?

If it is a desktop computer, and not a mac, you can probably just take the hard drive out and install it in another computer.

It sounds like a laptop and I think the same process is possible just more difficult.

Hopefully, someone smarter than me will respond. I've already topped cc in intelligence so there is a small pattern starting.

Yep...You can get a standalone external case/bay at BestBuy for like $30. Plugs into the computer via USB and you can get whatever from it. Then you have yourself a handy back-up drive.

Just take it to the geek squad at best buy. It should only run you about $9000. Definitely worth it.

The item you're looking for is called an external enclosure. Like others stated, it more or less converts your hard drive into an external hard drive. If you can, avoid Best Buy and buy it somewhere else. They can be had for pretty cheap at Micro Center (if you live in Cinci/Columbus/Cleveland)

It's a safe bet it's a 2.5" sata drive, so you can get something like this:

Well when my hard drive died I couldn't wait a day or two for something in the mail. A new hard drive and enclosure (to attempt recovery) cost me a few extra bucks but hardly huge money. And, yes, I paid $50 for them to swap out the drives in my laptop (I took one look at it, and then at my fat fingers and said "no way").

I don't think that's a bad price for labor as I've mucked around well over a few hours (the right tools would help) trying to do some of this myself before. Some things are easy to do yourself, but for others $50 is a good deal to me. And you don't have to buy the part in their store, either, to use their install services.
