With the Central District (please excuse typo in header) seeding meetings set for Feb 13th, I thought we should put together a guide to help prepare the coaches.....feel free to add your own.

"He was sick."

"He was winning and got caught."

"He wasn't in shape then because of football."

"He's gotten better since then."

"He has quality losses."

"He is a great student."

"He is a great kid."

"He is a really hard worker."

"We wrestled a really tough schedule."

"He has adjusted to the weight now."

"The kid has incredible strength."

"I'm friends with Cruiser96."

"His Mom is hot."

Second to last will get you NOWHERE!!! And fast. :D

It has been my experience that coaches will always start with a confused "Uhhhh" and then go on about their kid. 7 times out of 10 they will mention the kid by his first name.

Great times.

"He beat that kid two years ago" and "this kid always steps up for the big matches" are two of my favorites lol

I've always loved how Coaches talk about how their kids lost very close matches to the good wrestlers. I've always wanted to ask them "Who did they beat?".

There's also a few Coaches that tend to talk way too much about every single wrestler. When they walk into the seeding room, you can hear a collective sigh and know that you will not be the first Coaches at Gatsby's.

"My kid pinned Billy who majored Tommy who minored Jimmy who merely lost in sudden-death overtime to Danny who beat your kid by two in regulation, and the only reason your kid lost by two and not three is Danny kicked him with six seconds left!"

I think we should embrace this as part of the process and give an award to the coach who gets the least qualified kid the highest seed!

Lou, my good man, you could be on to something.

Recently, I was at a type of meeting like this when Coach A - who had a very good and tough wrestler - just sort of read off his comments. All pretty praise-worthy accomplishments too. The moderator asked Coach B if he'd like to talk abou his kid before it went to a coaches vote and coach said sure, mention a couple of things and then mentioned he was league champ last year.

It went to te coaches vote and if I recall correctly, Coach B won and won big. Both coaches were a little confused!

Is there always an odd number of coaches? And if not what do you do in case their is a tie in the voting?

Just curious.

Vote again, hoping someone changes their vote. If not, flip a coin.

I do give a little credibility to schedule. A Marysville kid at 19-9 if no head to head is better than a Westland or Kilbourne kid who never left Central Ohio and is 23-7

I've never understood why there are seeding meetings for Sectionals. Somehow Ironman, Medina, Brecksville, PowerAide, Top Gun and every other great tourney is able to function without this silly exercise. It should be criteria, period.

Cruiser, even though I'm no longer coaching, I'm still held to the Wrestling Coaches code of silence. What happens in seeding meetings, stays in seeding meetings. Also, since i'm in retirement, I can skip the meeting and head straight to Gatsby's!

Probably because all teams are local and ultimate goal on the line. Coaches can help or hinder a kids chances by placement. More often than not the seeds fall the way they should anyway. In the end it is still up to the kid to win matches.

Coach: He wrestled in the (fill in the blank) tournament.
Group: How did he do?
Coach: Well, he went 0-2.

Dumbest comments I ever heard.

I always like when a coach who wasn't planning on putting his kid up, does...only after another coach, who shouldn't be putting his kid up, does and the 1st coach's kid beat the 2nd coach's kid! You end up with 4-5 wrestlers vying for a seed that clearly should only be contested by 2 wrestlers! Hilarious and good times!!

The mom is hot criteria is 2nd only to state champ!!

"I do give a little credibility to schedule. A Marysville kid at 19-9 if no head to head is better than a Westland or Kilbourne kid who never left Central Ohio and is 23-7"

This logic is foolish as well. So the Marysville kid who lost against all nine tough opponents (Eds, Steub, Blair, 0-2 at Brecks, etc.) with no "signature" win vs. a 23-7 person of the quality of say a Shakur Laney (easiest for me to think of a strong weight, 106) who has lost to Nace twice, perhaps Brusco a couple, maybe a Noah Jay and a couple times to a Guit, but has beaten a Lakso, an Oberly and a Furnas and you have a good argument for the Laney type competetitor. Don't get blinded by the colors on the singlet. Numbers, records and names of tournaments are not effective measurements of wrestling ability. If you actually want to seed people based on who is deserving, you need to remove such things and make judgements based on individual cases of who each wrestler has wrestled and beaten.

My all time favorite was when one of my boys was a clear cut 2 seed behind JT Rice but had got caught the week before in a dual at Kilbourne. So we conceded the 1 seed to JT and put our kid up at 2. Right at the last second a coach chimed in that his kid (just barley over 50% wins) beat the kid that pinned our kid. Now our kid not only placed at every tourney including Top Gun but only had like 5 loses on the year, but this "older" coach who had been around since I wrestled in high school just said one phase "common opponent"......So it when to a coaches vote and the "older" coach won. Now this is where I love the fact you get to pick any line you want. So instead of picking the typical "3 seed" line we picked the line that had us meeting the 2 seed inthe quarters. The other coach just gave me a funny confused look. So eventually the 2 and 3 seed met in quarters and like I assumed what would happen our "3 seed" tech'd the "2 seed". Unfortunately this also most likely cost the "2 seed" a top four spot and he never made it out. After the match the coach came up to me and said "you weren't joking that your kid was better and I'll never go against you again for a seed". Unfortunately coaches egos get in the way and can cost kids, but on the other hand a good coach can also make moves that can help kids that most likely wouldn't make it out do so! I love the seeding meeting! I think this is where good coaches get achance to shine!
